Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dj Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi DJ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Since i was age 7, My parents travelled in full time music ministry singing at churches for their sole living. They did it full time for over 30 years and i grew up home-schooling and traveling with them. I watched the way my parents performed, (my dad sang and my mom played the piano). I watched the way they did business and how they never placed making money more important than taking time and performing whenever it was necessary. I’ve watched them perform at nursing homes and in people hospital rooms. I’ve also watched them perform in some of the biggest churches in the U.S. i watched the way they prioritized people and were willing to love everyone they’ve come in contact with. My parents taught me how to make community and love a priority. They also taught me to pick your own path and travel in your own lane no matter what. They taught me that real value comes from the way you can make strangers and friends feel. My dad still to this day says, “people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
i started a band right out of college called Scratch Track with 2 of my best friends. We toured the country full time for about 12 years and i learned SO much about being an independent band and running and growing our business. we did NOT always make the best decisions but we were able to keep building and growing enough that we kept our bills paid. We were a minimalistic band with very low overhead and stylistically singular. An article in a NYC college newspaper was written about us that said, “style bending, mind-bending and undeniably original.” We leaned into that idea of being as original and authentic as we could be. Currently i perform solo as Rockababyrock and in my band The Magi and i still lean deep into those principles of being an original and independent act. we fund all of our recordings and merch with band funds and we are building our brand slowly, organically and consistently. I’m very proud of the steps we have taken to get this far and look forward to continue to reach out to more audiences. What we do live is unlike any other band out there and its important for us to build fans in live performances. We’ve recently played in London, Hawaii and Canada and will be in Mexico later in 2025…excited to continue to reach audiences internationally along with all over the US.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
if we as a society don’t continue to support live music or the arts than the computers and AI will win. I know that live music will always have a place in our world, but i hope that we can all (me included) put our phones down for a bit and share spaces and energy together and listen to artists and musicians pour their talents out on stage. I know the giant creatives will always have platforms because their music is more etched into our culture. its the unknowns that need support. Also in turn, its important that we as creatives are working hard to put our best food forward and make these live experiences memorable.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
the rewarding part of being a creative is that i can actually connect with people. I heard someone once say, “music is just an avenue to get into people’s lives”. that feels a little different now with the availability of people via social media. but honestly, everytime The Magi finishes a gig, people always message us or come up to us afterwards and say “i needed this” or “you guys have such a great vibe and energy”. thank you so much.
that is rewarding. connecting. shaking a strangers hand and connecting on whatever level. that’s what life is really about. I mean the whole concept of almost all of us being here is, “two strangers meet each other and create people”. that mirrors what songs can do. two strangers connecting with melody or a lyric or a groove.
