We were lucky to catch up with Megan Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
At Opulent Suds, my mission is to provide everyday luxury through handcrafted soaps and body care products made with gentle yet effective ingredients that are safe for the whole family. Inspired by the journey of my acne and my kids’ eczema and sensitive skin, I focus on nourishing, high-quality formulations using ingredients that are easy to understand and pronounce—because self-care should be simple, not complicated.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Megan Mitchell, and I am the owner and founder of Opulent Suds — an everyday luxury soap and body care brand created with your family’s well-being in mind.
Like many mothers, I found myself struggling to discover who I was outside of motherhood. I wasn’t sure what my hobbies were, what I was good at, or what truly sparked excitement within me beyond my everyday responsibilities.
In 2020, I became hyper-focused on what we were putting on and in our bodies. I noticed that certain products would cause reactions on my kids’ skin, but I couldn’t pinpoint the source because of the long list of unknown ingredients in mass produced soaps and lotions. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands.I spent late nights and early mornings researching and experimenting with recipes and techniques, all while keeping the ingredients simple and safe.
As I grew more confident in my recipe, I started making many creative soaps and some of them became brand staples. I knew there was value in these limited ingredient, small batch, handmade soaps. I began sharing them with family and the feedback pushed me to start selling at local farmers markets, sharing my knowledge with customers who had similar skin concerns and an interest in natural skincare. I’m most proud in knowing that I have complete control over the ingredients we use on our bodies every single day. I’ve also found a creative outlet and a community to explore of like minded people, all while helping others along the way!
Some of my top-selling products include the Cocoa Butter Cashmere Soap, Body Polish, and Body Cream known for its captivating luxurious scent. Also the Activated Charcoal Soap, which is amazing for acne prone skin, helping to detoxify and cleanse.
How did you build your audience on social media?
A lot of my social media audience started out as customers who found me at farmers markets and later followed my journey on social media, where they could learn more about my products and see behind the scenes. Over time, I’ve learned that being genuine, sharing my expertise, and showing up as my true authentic self are what truly help build an engaged audience. My focus is not just selling products but educating and helping others make informed choices about their skincare. That’s what keeps my community growing!
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
As of now, I sell my products primarily through my own website and at local farmers markets, rather than using other platforms. For me, having my own website gives me full control over my brand, customer experience, and pricing. It allows me to build direct relationships with my customers, create a seamless shopping experience, and maintain my brand’s luxury feel without competing with mass market listings.
One of the biggest pros of selling on my own site is brand ownership—I control everything from the design and messaging to customer interactions. I also avoid marketplace fees, which means I can reinvest more into my business. Additionally, I can offer a personalized experience, including tailored product recommendations and direct communication with my customers.
However, a challenge of selling on my own platform is that I don’t get the built-in traffic that marketplaces provide. It requires consistent marketing—through social media, email lists, and in-person events like farmers markets—to drive people to my site. Another con is that I handle everything, from customer service to website maintenance, which can be time-consuming.
That said, I love the flexibility and creative freedom that comes with running my own site. It allows me to stay true to Opulent Suds’ mission of providing high-quality, handcrafted skincare with ingredients you can trust, while also creating a direct connection with my customers.
