Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chizoba Okeke. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Chizoba thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Immediately after graduating from college, I found myself at a crossroads. It was the height of COVID, and like many others, I was trying to navigate an uncertain future. As I prepared to drop my graduation photos, I began crafting a caption that highlighted my accomplishments. But as I sat there, trying to list what I had achieved, I was hit with an unexpected realization—I didn’t feel accomplished.
I had done a lot during my undergraduate years. I was actively involved in prestigious organizations like Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Collegiate 100 Chicago, dedicated time to volunteering and serving my community, and even launched my makeup hustle. But despite everything, something felt missing—I felt empty inside. The excitement of graduation faded quickly, and I found myself battling self-doubt, questioning whether I was good enough.
The one thing that kept me going during this time was launching my official website for my makeup business. Creating content felt like a step in the right direction, but I still hesitated. I let insecurities take control, which led me to doubt myself at every turn. Even as bookings started coming in, the excitement was short-lived because deep down, I still didn’t believe in myself. Eventually, the weight of my self-doubt became too much to handle, pushing me toward a life-altering decision—one that changed everything.
I decided to pursue a career path that I thought aligned with my work. People told me it was something I should be doing, and I convinced myself that because it promised financial stability, it would be the right move. But passion was missing. I wasn’t fulfilled. I slowly became a version of myself that I didn’t recognize, facing one obstacle after another, each one leading me closer to failure. I hit rock bottom—a place I never thought I’d be.
Then, everything shifted.
I suddenly lost a loved one, and their passing forced me to confront the fragility of life. Grief has a way of putting things into perspective—it made me realize that time is too precious to be wasted living for others. If I only have one life, I need to live it for myself.
Hitting rock bottom was painful, but it was also the turning point I needed. It forced me to rebuild, refocus, and realign with what truly makes me happy. Today, I embrace the risks that come with chasing my passion because I know that fulfillment isn’t found in playing it safe—it’s found in betting on yourself, believing in your purpose, and creating a life that feels true to who you are.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Chizoba Anastacia, but most people call me Chi! :) I am the founder, makeup artist, and creative director of The CHI Diaries Makeup. My journey into makeup artistry began in January 2018, in my college dorm room, where I started taking clients and perfecting my craft. What began as a passion project has now evolved into a thriving business, where I provide makeup services for photoshoots, fashion shows, special occasions, and bridal glam.
I offer a range of makeup services tailored for clients of all ages, from soft glam to editorial looks, and I also provide 1-on-1 and group makeup classes. Beyond just makeup application, I use my platform as a beauty blog, where I share insights on the latest trends in the beauty world, offer product reviews, and recommend my favorite must-haves.
My love for makeup artistry is deeply rooted in my love for art. As a kid, I was always drawing, painting, and practicing calligraphy—often creating anime characters, painting nature scenes, and writing Bible verses in decorative script.
During my pre-teen years, my mom sold Mary Kay products, and I would experiment with her extra makeup (with permission, of course!). Around the same time, I became obsessed with YouTube makeup tutorials—watching them for hours on my brother’s iPod, completely ignoring homework and even dinner. What started as curiosity and creativity soon became a gift that transformed into a business I never imagined would take me this far.
From the very beginning, I wanted my brand to be more than just “beating faces”—I wanted it to be a community. A space for people who share the same passion for beauty, artistry, and self-expression. But even more than that, I wanted to embrace and uplift real beauty—imperfections and all.
As someone who has textured and imperfect skin, I once believed this would hold me back in my career. But I realized that confidence is the true foundation of beauty. My brand stands for authenticity, inclusivity, and self-love. It’s not about having “perfect” skin—it’s about finding the right products, using the right techniques, and embracing your unique beauty.
This philosophy extends beyond makeup—it applies to life itself. Whether it’s creating the perfect glam look or chasing your dreams, don’t let anything deter you from becoming who you want to be.
That’s what The CHI Diaries Makeup represents—a brand built on passion, artistry, and the power of self-expression.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, I wish I had attended makeup shows and conferences earlier in my career. Last year, I had the opportunity to attend The Makeup Show Chicago, and the experience was absolutely incredible!
I met so many beauty gurus, makeup enthusiasts, and talented artists, but the highlight was meeting two of my biggest beauty icons—Danessa Myricks, global makeup artist and founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty, and Uzo Ukaeje, NARS Global Artist Director and founder of Uzo Beauty. Meeting them in person, hearing their insights, and receiving advice on growing as a makeup artist was truly inspiring.
Beyond that, the event was an amazing networking opportunity. Several major makeup brands were in attendance, and I had the chance to connect with their teams, explore new products, and gain valuable industry knowledge. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who share the same passion and drive was both motivating and empowering.
For any makeup artist or beauty enthusiast, I highly recommend attending industry events like this. The exposure, education, and connections you gain are game-changing. I plan to attend more beauty conferences in the future and can’t wait for the next Makeup Show!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a makeup artist is the moment my client sees their finished look—that instant when they look in the mirror and their face lights up with joy and confidence. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about knowing that my artistry has the power to make someone feel beautiful, empowered, and radiant.
This feeling is especially profound for clients who rarely get their makeup done or have never seen themselves in full glam. Witnessing their excitement, self-love, and even emotional reactions is what fuels my passion. It’s not just about applying makeup—it’s about enhancing natural beauty and bringing out the confidence that already exists within them.
Makeup has always been a tool of self-expression, transformation, and empowerment, and I take great pride in being a part of that experience for my clients. Glamour is something so many women love and desire, and being able to create that for them on their special moments—whether it’s a wedding, a photoshoot, or just a day to feel extra special—is a responsibility I cherish.
I truly believe that beauty is more than skin deep—it’s about how you feel when you step into the world. If my work can help someone feel like the most confident and unstoppable version of themselves, then I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.
