We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jesse Mar-ramirez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jesse below.
Hi Jesse, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Personally I like to imagine that all of the shoots I am on are meaningful to me in one way or another, whether it’s the significance in tradition or even just the people I work with. There are, however, shoots that have stood out as very significant to both me and my clients in the past, one of those being a couple I have kept in touch with ever since they first reached out to me.
These two individuals requested Event Photography for a Baby Shower they were holding and let me know beforehand that they were very excited for all of their friends and family to celebrate them and perform dances for everybody to see. Upon arriving I was treated just like family, and while I worked they trusted me wholeheartedly with capturing the heart of the emotion in the room. Soon after the celebrations wrapped up, My clients quickly scheduled a Maternity session with me where we would later on talk further about them and their future as a growing family. I learned about their experiences as up and coming parents including the joy and anxiety that comes with the rapid shift in their lives, I was even lucky enough to learn the name of their baby before most people knew! I knew that I shared a special connection with not only them but also the rest of their family.
As time passed, their family members would continue to seek me out for family photos, 1st birthdays, and at each and every one I would get a visit from my two initial clients! It really was a magical moment for me when I met their baby in person for the first time, because even though so much time had passed, it almost felt like everything had happened in an instant.
In my line of work, I feel lucky enough to be chosen to capture a special moment in a person’s life, but being able to have those moments compound and witnessing those people who chose you become so much greater than you could imagine is indescribable. I love sharing meaningful connections with those I’m fortunate enough to work with and I hope to continue to add stories like this down the road.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jesse! I’m a SoCal Filmmaker Photographer and I run Delamar Media: a company that excels in delivering everything from beautiful wedding photography to school headshots. I have a background in film and also work as a Steadicam Operator!
While studying at California State University Long Beach for my degree in Cinematography and Marketing, I would often find myself attempting to work wherever I felt could give me the most experience in the world of media. I’ve worked on feature films, music videos, and almost every kind of wedding/celebration there is! As I got closer to graduating, I became very close to a group of Wedding photographers who showed me the ropes on special moments for Newly Wedded Couples and I grew to love all of the aspects of weddings when it comes to photography!
With Delamar Media, I am focusing on Wedding Photography and Cinematography that brings together all of my talents as a filmmaker to make memories that last a lifetime. Having multiple years of experience makes it so that any questions brought to me by my wonderful clients are met with immediate answers and quick solutions. Working with couples from so many different backgrounds has also made it easier than ever to accommodate my services to exactly what they need for their special occasion. I bring a level of professionalism and familiarity to not only the couples I work with, but the photographers and videographers that help me with the process every time we go out and shoot! I’m extremely proud of the both the quality and praise my work receives, as well as how consistently I’m able to put out that level of effort for all of my clients.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think many non-creatives would look at the Wedding Photography space and say that it’s an easy job: that all you need to do is click a button; that they can do the exact same thing on their phone. I have and will always be a firm believer that a human connection and passion is necessary to make sure that moments like the ones that we capture are timeless and will be remembered for years to come. I take pride in building a connection with not only those I am photographing but also their friends and family. I love learning their story and making sure that what they receive in the end is not just another product but a representation of them that they can cherish forever.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Starting out with the wedding space, I quickly had to learn that not every space is going to be filled with perfect lighting as I would expect in a film space. Working and adapting to my space is crucial to making the best of the limited time im given.
Today, I am always planning ahead with regards to weather, lighting, sound and situations. One of the worst feelings is that of being caught off guard, and I aim to make sure that never happens when I’m in control.
