We recently connected with Jen Fields and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
Shamanism is quite a bit different from other vocations in that IT chooses YOU, not the other way around. Most practitioners are brought to doing this work through a very painful initiation. Typically the life you knew prior is completely stripped away, bringing you to the doorway of the spirit realm as a source of healing. This is exactly what happened to me, and many who came before me. On the other side of the crumbling of my life (the love of my life passed away, I miscarried a child- I was unable to function because of grief so I lost my career, and subsequently, my will to live), I found myself in the arms of Spirit and Spirit alone. Shamanism requires a “clearing of the slate” in order to begin anew – what came before cannot follow you onto the new path. As my grief started to heal and my gifts began to open up, I realized that I could see, hear, feel, and interact with things in a realm that I never knew existed prior. It was very scary at first, because I didn’t understand what was happening to me, but as the old saying goes “when the student is ready, the teacher appears”, and I was soon introduced to a powerful shaman who would go on to teach me how to navigate this potent new way of being. She showed me how to use my spiritual sight to support my own healing, and then after some time – the healing of others. I was shown how to access potential and possibilities that I never dreamed of in the spirit realm – how to recall pieces of the the soul that have been hurt or fragmented and bring them into a place of healing and wholeness. How to “rewrite” moments in time to heal trauma. How to connect with divine guidance to support the highest and best versions of ourselves. And SO much more. Shamanic work brought a beautiful sense of fulfillment and purpose to my life, and I’m so grateful that Spirit called me to this work (even though the initiation was brutal – it was SO worth it!)

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As discussed previously, I was brought to this work through a call from Spirit. I trained under an established shaman for two years, and under her direction I was able to hone in on my own individual gifts that I bring to the practice of shamanism.
The power that is channeled in shamanic healing comes directly from God/Source, and is not our own (we are merely a conduit), but each healer lends to the session their own “medicine” which flavors the work. What this means is that not every shamanic healer is a good fit for every person (or visa versa). I like to have a conversation with my clients before we do any kind of work in the spirit realm, to assure that we are alignment and that the client feels safe with me. I always bring the intention that the highest good of all be served in every single session, so it’s important to me that a client only work with me if they feel a deep sense of connection to my energy and my heart. This ensures that together, we can do the deepest work possible together, with the highest potential for change and healing.
The possibilities for healing in the spirit realm are endless, and I support clients on a journey through their subconscious for a great variety of reasons. Some clients want to connect directly to their spirit guides for loving support and clarity in their lives. Some come seeking freedom from patterns that are keeping them “stuck”. Others have specific trauma or grief they desire to work through and heal. Other sessions focus on inner child healing, recognizing and honoring self worth, or even fostering deeper connections in the clients life.
I don’t know if “pride” is the right word for how I feel about my work. I think that I can describe it best as an honor. I feel deeply honored each time a client trusts me to bear witness in their most vulnerable spaces of their lives. The work that I feel so privileged to be a part of is deeply magical and potent healing. It’s the biggest blessing to co-facilitate with the client, some of the the most transformational moments of life.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have built my clientele strictly via word of mouth. I have never had to advertise. Almost without fail, a client that comes to me one time will then turn around and send friends (and often family) my way for a session.
I believe that this happens for a few reasons. First, most people aren’t familiar with shamanism when they first come to me. If they have any kind of presuppositions, they are usually pretty far off base from what the work actually is, and result in a general skeptical attitude when they walk in the door. I believe that an encounter with spirit realm changes all of that. Clients leave sessions with a deeper understanding of reality, and an expansion of their own experience in it. They get a glimpse of what is possible beyond the realm of the day to day that most people believe is “all there is”. And they see and feel HOPE for change and healing.
Why do they choose to do this with me specifically? Why do they come back again and again? And why do they refer loved ones to me?
I believe it is because they feel safe with me to step outside their “normal”. I’d like to think it is because I lead with my heart – fiercely. I open myself wide to allow the Holy Spirit to move through me…I try to get out of the way as much as possible to foster a session that is divinely led. The “medicine” lies in that field of connection when love is the driving force. I believe that my clients leave changed because of those potent moments. And it’s why my rapport with them is so solid that they essentially do my “advertising” for me.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
It’s funny, because I never “chose” this path. I thought I was going to be a professional singer and performer. But the Universe had other plans, and after the my previous life got completely upended, I found myself here, doing spiritual/shamanic work.
That being said, it has been the most MAGICAL and PROFOUND thing that has ever happened to me. I never dreamed this kind of work was possible, let alone that I could do it. So, when all is said done….would I go back (even knowing all the hell that I had to survive to get to this point) and choose it of my own free will? Absolutely.
