We were lucky to catch up with Jose Martinez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jose, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My Dad has always been on a stage. After seeing him perform with his band at a huge country fair, I wanted to know how can I get my hands on all that gear making everything work. The audio consoles always have gotten my attention. Seeing all those cables and the Tech going crazy, I just wanted to be part of that craziness.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started off in a performing arts theater in 2012 with a group called “Roxy Theater Group”. Once I started there, it was a huge learning experience. I had to learn Audio and Lighting while also having to learn Stage Design. Being part of the Roxy will always be the best part of my journey. While working for the Roxy, I wanted to dive in the world of AV Freelance. I started freelancing in hope of learning more skills and trade to bring back to the Roxy. I started freelancing with a company called “Frost Lighting” in 2015. There I learned the standard of AV, how to setup and program Audio, Video, and Lighting. Learned Stage Design more in depth and how to handle Corporate Clients. There is where I got my inspiration for wanted to start my own production company.
Now I have my own Production Company, “Licht Designs LLC”. I offer Live Production Services. I provide Audio, Lighting, Video, and Staging. But most of the time, I am called to provide my Technical Services as an operator. I can operate various audio, lighting, and video surfaces and consoles. Being in this industry for 15 years has gotten me in front of of so much technologies that I have to always keep up with this ever changing business.
Even as a operator I have taken many rolls, one of them being Project Manager. Managing projects for my clients is always a great time when getting everything together. From talking about what type of technologies needed to getting the crew together. I have had many successful events with my clients just getting the logistics done with them.
Being in this industry I have done things I never thought I can do. I have worked for III Points, Jack U, and Insomniac. I have helped build some clubs in Miami that I hear about on a daily biases. Just being part of so many projects over the years has made me really happy to see that my work gets seen by so many faces. This has turned into a way of life for me, I love what I do.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I know one thing anyone will struggle to understand is “How did I get into this and how did I get established”.
I didn’t get into it, I was offered the opportunity to join a theater group and took it. and as for being established, all the years of freelancing has gotten me to be a preferred hire everywhere I go. it is a hard journey being in this industry, allot of people wanting to have a spot somewhere and the constant battle of a bid. you just have to keep fighting and sending emails. But once of have won so many battles, it starts to come naturally that clients just want you.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main goal is to always have a successful event no matter what. Getting everything dialed in to create a great experience for my clients is always rewarding.
