We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Allen Triplett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Allen, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have been in love with art ever since I was in first grade, growing up I had cousins that I would compete with and would have family members jury our art. My grandfather truly wanted to reinforce the joy it brought me and still to this day I’m thankful for those memories. I spent many years pursuing other interests until I was in high school. I had a parent with poor mental health and preventing them from taking their life was what pushed me onto the creative journey I am on today. If there’s any legacy I would want to give through art it is the healing properties art can give the mind in times of resistance. I hope my journey will inspire someone else to consider choosing art instead of ending life early. My art is deeply rooted in music and how I translate what I hear in my synesthesia into abstract paintings. I love the challenge of adapting the abstracts into people animals and themes that evoke deeper meanings through visual story telling.
Allen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Art, for me, is a powerful weapon, a tool to fight against the darkness that can overwhelm the mind and spirit. In a world where silence often surrounds the struggle with mental health, I use my work as a means of liberation, offering a voice to the voiceless and a space for healing to those who feel unseen. My art is a reminder that there is beauty, hope, and resilience even in the midst of despair.
Each piece I create is an invitation to confront the rawest of human emotions the pain, the isolation, and the hopelessness that can accompany the desire to escape. But it is also a call to reclaim power, to acknowledge the light that remains even in our darkest hours. Through my use of color, texture, and form, I create works that speak to the complexity of the human experience, offering both an honest reflection of suffering and a path toward liberation.
Art, as I see it, is not just about creating something visually pleasing it is about sparking transformation, igniting a sense of possibility, and offering those who struggle with suicidal thoughts a chance to reconnect with their own humanity. It is about confronting the silence and replacing it with an outpouring of expression, emotion, and connection. Through this process, I seek to open up spaces for people to breathe, to feel, and to know that they are not alone in their battles using art as a weapon, I hope to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, to shatter the isolation that often accompanies despair, and to remind those who are suffering that their lives are worth fighting for. Every piece is an act of defiance against the darkness—an affirmation that there is always a way out, a way through, and a way to rebuild. My work is my call to liberation, a chance to transform pain into purpose and to empower others to hold on, to seek help, and to ultimately find the light that exists within them.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of creativity is seeing the emotional impact it has when my audience connects to the message behind each piece of art. I want to use my art to heal the hearts of as many people as i can by opening others up to the strength of their own vulnerability by telling their own stories through creativity.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe society can help support artists through sharing their social media accounts with friends and family. They can support creatives by purchasing prints or original paintings. They can also support artists by sharing art opportunities they hear about in their local community. Another way they can support creatives is by introducing us to other artists you know personally!
