We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marcus Buckner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Marcus, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?

Yes I manage my own social media at this time. It’s kind of the driving force behind my success with Square Bidness Apparel. I like to use imagery with music to push my narrative with my brand. Music is timeless and most can relate in one way or another. I came from the initial era of social media or social networking from like the AOL chat rooms or Black Planet?? I think that was the name of it, that was back in the late 90s. So I been familiar with social networking sites for a while now, so when it comes to managing my company social media it comes naturally. My advice to someone trying to make the decision of managing it themselves or hiring someone to manage it for them is do time permit you to do it yourself, or is it in your company’s best interest to get someone more qualified to do it! If doing it yourself brings better results than letting someone else do it for you is the decision you have to make!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I been into fashion my whole life. I come from a family of fashion lovers so it’s always been around me. From my sisters to my cousins Aunties and Uncles. I can remember coming up and my Uncle Larry came home with a Silk green Girbaud shirt, he laid it on the table and we all got to look at it and touch it ‘a little bit’. That was like a family moment we had there like wow! Or getting my first pair of Michael Jordan shoes I’m in the kindergarten and I can remember having my shoe on the seat the whole ride to school because people wanting to look at the shoes, I didn’t even know what was going on but I knew it was something. By the way they were the Jordan 4s black!
So dressing comes natural for me. I wasted a lot of time doing a bunch of stuff that didn’t mean anything now but now I’m doing what I was put here to do, and that’s put them clothes on me and my clients. We service everyone men, women, and kids. And we promote doing business the right way, that’s why it’s Square Bidness Apparel. I am the most proud of how far we have come in these three years of being in business because it shows we are not a fly by night brand and we’re going to be here!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

It’s really just STAYING DOWN and sticking to the plan. I heard after how people were laughing and talking about what I decided to focus on, but I didn’t see or hear none of it cause I was on a mission this was not the first or second time I had to start from scratch, but what I knew was if I built that like that just imagine what I can do with this. So I didn’t even concern myself with the spectators or people watching from the bleachers knowing that I’m actually in the game. So point is people gossip and laugh at the things they can’t understand so you got to keep doing your thing because they don’t know any better ‘POOR THINGS’ bless there hearts!

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?

I bet on and funded myself initially but like I said on the other question if I was able to do that like that just imagine what I can do with this! I have no regrets! Now I put myself in position to have funding opportunities now and it’s overwhelming at times because banks see my progress and are willing to help take my vision to another level and I’m grateful for the opportunity that God have blessed me with! I put God first in all of this because without him I wouldn’t be getting interviewed for the second time.
