We recently connected with Eric Chapman and have shared our conversation below.
Eric, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Music was an interest for me early on, at a young age i would play in middle school band, such as instruments such as; Saxophone, Trombone, and Clarinet. Around this time i was discovering music like System of a Down, My Chemical Romance, Greenday, Disturbed, Korn and more. My brother was learning guitar, and had one in his room, i would always ask about it. One day he gave me the guitar, and i was off to the races.
Later in my teen years, i began to attend a private music school called Natural Ear Music School, where i got to train under John Moyer the bass player of disturbed. The mission for the school was to teach kids a 5 song set to play at local venues in Austin Texas, like EMOS, STUBBS, HOLE IN THE WALL and more.
For me this was a huge turning point in my life, and i knew then and there someday i would make a career out of it.
Eric, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Later in life, after my upbringing of finding personal interest in music, I took a break to get my life on track. I ended up moving out from Austin Texas to Chicago Illinois, to live with my dad. At this time I was more than aware that making a living from music would be hard. It was a reality check, so i decided to make cars/ working on them my career path.
During that time, i would attend car shows, and those car shows would throw small EDM shows during the shows. When i was in Austin Texas in my early teens, i would Dj local shows, and it was cool to see people doing things like that in Chicago.
One day I decided i wanted to start investing in my dreams as a early teen, to push myself to learn how to produce music outside of a band, and strictly in a digital area.
Speeding up to 2 years after this choice back in 2022, to quit my job and pursue music full time. i rebranded to a Music Alias going by Hysteric. In the last 2 years since rebranding from my old teen musician name, I started to submit my music to well known and established labels such as, Riddim Network, Rough Records, Runes (FKA The Bass Space), Murder We Wrote and more.
At this point I’m more than proud of how far I’ve came in this path as a musician going from 0 follower to 1000 in under a year and a half, and establishing myself as a respected EDM artist in the undergrown EDM scene.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Growth is the most commonly asked question, and my response will always be the same. First step is to establish what your brand is, and what it stands for, and the meaning behind it. Second is to be constant as you can, never settle for a day off if you want it to become successful. But most importantly is third, you need to invest in your brand, otherwise why would someone invest in you, if you don’t want to invest in yourself. But remember the golden rule, success is something you attract, not chase.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me its the only way i can freely express my emotions, and being able to embody my feelings in a way that can share it with others, that’s extremally rewarding. There are times when i want to quit, but the support and love from the piers around me who support my path is what helps me from forgetting how far I’ve come. Seeing people love what i make, and my releases doing well is just that added icing to the cake of the rewards we reek when doing this line of work.
