We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Germaine Owens. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Germaine below.
Alright, Germaine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
It has always been a dream of mine to create art that would resonate with communities I hold near and dear to my heart. I have always been an advocate for Autistic kids and Adults and I initially wanted to create bold and colorful art that they can identify with. This all happened during the covid pandemic . Letting them know that it’s okay to be different . Our Motto is ” Ordinary Humans Do Not Exist”. It was also important for us to build a platform of Equality for our LGBTQ community and promote Anti-Hate, and Anti-Racism for our people of color. We have customers from all over the world and they motivate us to continue creating positive messages .

Germaine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am originally from Louisiana , born and raised. I moved to NYC in late 2006, One year after Hurricane Katrina. I also met my wife that year, who pursuing a nursing career. We decided to build a life here and through the years we knew we wanted to make a difference in communities and be a part of the solution. We created Be The People in late 2020 and have been rocking in communities all over NYC, and New Jersey ever since. It makes me proud when we meet people that say we are inspirations and when they let us know that we are making a difference . We have many return customers that look forward to new material from us. They inspire us to keep growing and keep creating . It isn’t often you find a Queer, Black-Women Owned business and we are here to stay. We appreciate all the love and support.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding for us is to see how people are so supportive of our craft. That is most rewarding. Especially when we are at events and we meet people from different countries or teachers of special needs kids that praise us for the great work that we do. Thats the best part.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Continue to be yourself. Never let anyone tell you that you cant or dim your light . There is space out here for all of us and continue to lift each other up. With everything that is happening in the world we need safe spaces and we will continue to create them.
