We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bret Raybould a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bret, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I would say Race: The Movie: The Play has been the most meaningful project I’ve worked on. It had a very successful off-Broadway run. I got to work on it with a bunch of friends and fantastic creative collaborators. We took something that was just originally a joke between me and my co-writer and good friend Cristian Duran, and years later had a full show that sold out its last six performances at the Soho Playhouse.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a comedian based in NYC. I am very proud of how many disciplines I am focused on: writing and performing stand up as well as longer form storytelling like screenwriting.
I would love people to watch my upcoming special “Live at the Library.” I also have another special currently on YouTube called Bret Raybould Retires From Comedy. https://youtu.be/nHGAmXc-bS8?si=toi6mGh_gg5rY7z1
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Making something with friends that resonates with strangers.
I don’t want to have too much self-importance with comedy, but it does feel good knowing you can make someone’s day better.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Brian Koppelman who is a fantastic writer made these Vines about writing. Truly, hearing an accomplished writer I look up to distill writing advice down to a ton of 6-second lessons was exactly what I needed to start my screenwriting journey.
