We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Auditor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were restarting my writing career, one thing I would do differently would be not to let fear hold me back from trying new things.
When you are an aspiring entrepreneur or working in a creative profession, it is easy to let uncertainty and doubt hold you back.
I was scared of things like failure, embarrassing myself, or simply not being good enough.
I think that if I was starting over, I would just go for it. I would go to more events and workshops, talk to as many new people as I can, invest in myself, and put myself out there more.
Pursuing writing as a career was scary because I thought about how many people were better writers than me and how difficult it could be to find work.
Shifting my mindset, becoming more confident in myself, and seeing abundance in opportunities allowed me to gain experience and grow in my profession and as an individual.
So, if I could share something I’ve learned over the years, it would be to start with confidence. Devote your time to learning and new experiences, and don’t let fear hold you back from going for it. You don’t have to be the best when you start, you just have to be willing to learn.
I think that if fully leaned into this mindset when I started, I would have made progress much faster. However, I have also learned to understand that everyone’s timeline and journey is different.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Nicole and I have been writing content for over 4 years now. It all started with creating a “just-for-fun” blog website while being on lockdown during the height of COVID, but then turned into a realization that there was an opportunity for me to do something I love as a career.
After I had my son, I went back to school, earned my Bachelor’s Degree in English, and got a job working for an amazing company writing content about mental health and addiction treatment. Eventually, I started working at a social media marketing company, crafting viral short-form content for social media. In between, I worked on projects for small businesses, non-profits, and business owners looking to grow their business through content.
As a copywriter & content manager, I help San Diego businesses achieve their goals through creative & authentic content. Whether it is blogs, scripts, newsletters, web pages, informational products… I love to do it all!
In a time where content on social media seems so repetitive, so sale-sy, and honestly, sometimes inauthentic, one of my goals is to bring back that creative spark to local business, to craft content that is refreshing, yet effective.
One thing that I want people to know about my work is that I really care to get to know you & your business and to carry out the vision that you have created. I blend proven strategies with creativity and new ideas.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the greatest pivots in my life was switching my mindset from “I’m not sure what will happen” to “Let’s see what happens”.
Before I had my son, I was full of uncertainty about my career, school, and what I was passionate about in life.
Once I had him, it was like a light switch turned on. Becoming a mom sparked a light in me to go for a career that I loved and to take a chance on myself. So, instead of the uncertain path I was on, I started taking action. I went back to school to get my Bachelor’s in English, I got my first official writing job writing for mental health and addiction treatment centers, and I devoted a lot of time to learning how to expand my knowledge in copywriting.
I pivoted away from wondering what could happen and letting it hold me back, to actually trying and deciding to take the less traditional route of working as a freelance writer.
Doing this opened up a world of opportunities that has led me to where I am now! I’ve learned (and am continuing to learn) so much, have met amazing people and business owners along the way, and am growing my own business!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is connecting with amazing people.
I get to use my skills, creativity, and ideas to help other business owners achieve their own goals and build relationships with their community and audience.
There is something so fulfilling about learning about someone else’s story, seeing their values and journey as a business, and being able to play a part in that journey.
It is amazing to meet people who have built businesses doing something they love, who want to help others with their product/service, and whose hard work is inspiring.
