We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mari Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mari, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Every one of us has special moments in our lives. From celebrations to memorials, events are an integral part of the stories and memories that we share. I began cultivating my passion for events by creating elaborate birthdays, weddings, and other gatherings for family and friends. A lot of people encouraged me to take this to the next level by starting a business. In February of 2022, Sara (my co-owner) and I sat down and started pitching and formulating ideas of how we could take this dream that both of us had, and turn it into reality. We must have gone through hundreds of business names before landing on Adorable Memories. Something that stood out for both of us when picking the name, was that we wanted Adorable Memories to represent to our clients, that our business is a place where we can make your dreams come to life. Starting a business is no joke, but what gave us the confidence to continue on this journey was the passion that we have to put together unforgettable events for our clients.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Mari Rodriguez and I am the CEO and owner of Adorable Memories. We are an event planning and decoration-focused business, passionate about making your next event adorable and memorable. Over ten years ago, I started in the children’s event industry and was running a business similar to Adorable Memories but more focused on birthday parties. But, if we go way back you could say that entrepreneurship is in my blood. I grew up in Mexico City and come from a business family, and as the youngest of three, I quickly learned how to be quick on my feet and be able to put together creative ideas. This business spirit in me has inspired me to take giant leaps of faith, such as starting Adorable Memories. Our business provides a wide variety of services from event planning and decoration to day coordination. I believe that what makes us stand out from other local businesses, is that we care for our clients and we love being able to be a part of their special moments. Right now, one of the things that I am most proud of is the growth that I’ve seen Adorable Memories undertake within these last four years.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I lesson that I have learned while running a business is to keep going and push forward. There have been moments when I have felt defeated and almost have given up on my dream. Along the way, I have had many learning moments about what to do or not do with a business, which has been hard but a great opportunity for change and growth in my life. But I think that ultimately, what kept me going was my passion for being a businesswoman and the joy of seeing this life-long dream of mine come to life.

We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
Like I said before, ten years ago I started a business similar to the one I have now, but at the time I was also raising my three young kids. It was really hard because I had to figure out how to balance doing two of the things that I love most-being a mom and starting my dream. Unfortunately, I had to pause on that business venture to be there for my young kids, but something that I learned through that is that every dream has its perfect timing. In between this pause, I sold this children’s event’s business to now one of my good friends. I think that one thing I would say to my fellow entrepreneurs is that, it’s okay to take a pause sometimes and to reevaluate the different areas of your life that are important to you.
