We recently connected with Sistah Lu and have shared our conversation below.
Sistah, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As far as I can remember, music has always been a part of me. As a child, my grandma taught me how to play the piano. When she died, a part of me died, and I lost touch with my true calling. I became a nurse but always felt like I needed to do something else. A few years later, a jolt of fate somehow reignited my heart and before long, I was once again on this “not so easy road.” Nursing is what I do, but Music is my purpose and passion.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After losing my grandmother, I never thought about pursuing music but in a way, music chose me. Fate suddenly emerged one day, when a friend of mine, told me about a band that was looking for a vocalist. I honestly never thought that I would have gotten chosen for this chance, but to my surprise, I did. Since then, I have had the privileged to perform with several Caribbean bands, including my latest band venture, Sistah Lu and Island Powerhouse Band. From my very first time on stage , people started telling me how much they enjoyed my performances. My passion for performing has grown more and more through the years. It gives me so much inner joy seeing people have a good time and forgetting about their worries, whenever they see me on stage. I know now this is my purpose… to spread love, joy and positivity to everyone I come in contact with. I am happy to say now , mission accomplished.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have been pursuing music for over 30 years. I started in my 20s, and what a journey it has been. I think about it and can’t even believe it’s been that long! Buju Bonton said, “It’s not an easy road.” He sure was right! In fact, many days I wanted to quit, asking myself, what’s up with chasing the wind? “Dreams can sometimes feel like chasing the wind. It is so real that you feel it, but somehow you never actually get to hold it.” As I look back, struggles and obstacles have been many. I have even been approached by men who promise that they can help me fulfill my dream. And just when I thought that I had knocked on the right door, I got a reality check, quickly learning that all help isn’t with genuine intention. I made a decision to never compromise for a “con’s-promise.” Although I have heard more no’s than yes, I am still grateful for every single opportunity. No matter what obstacles I have faced and continued to face, I still somehow find the courage and strength to continue on this not so easy road. I have been broken hearted, disappointed and moments of wanting to give up along this path , but I know now that nothing has the power to stop this show… The show must go on!

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best thing that society can do is to support artists and show love whenever they can. Simple acts like attending a performance or giving a new artist a stage and a chance can make a huge difference. While local opportunities may be limited, there are always chances to shine and gain exposure, even beyond Jacksonville. Let’s come together to create more opportunities and celebrate the incredible talent here locally!
