We recently connected with Jacques Cornwell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jacques thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I remember when i was first getting into photography i had joined an online local photography group. In this group we would share photos, talk about gear and in general just nerd out about our shared interests. Anyways, I began to share my own photos and i was a fairly active user on this forum, and i would talk about gear i wanted to buy. One of these items being the new at the time Canon eos R, and this guy named Michael chimed in and he started talking about his, and he ended up reaching out to me and offering it to borrow. I jumped at the opportunity, he loaned it out to me complete with a canon 35mm f1.8 lens. Not even knowing my last name this guy trusted me with near $3000 worth of gear, wow. I tested it our for a month and i fell in love with it. after a month of use i returned it back to him and i went out to get my own.
It mattered to me because he went out of his way to give me a leg up on my photography journey, i might have been 18-19 at the time and just starting to get good at it and he believed in me enough to hand me his very expensive brand new camera like it was nothing. Since then he has hired me to shoot a number of events with him from birthdays to weddings and we work great together. It’s things like this that make a great deal of an impact on other people and cost you very little. Since then i have loaned out my gear several times to other photographers i know.

Jacques, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jacques Cornwell I am a photographer from Vancouver, Canada. I. got into Photography in late high school, I would carry my camera around everyone and i just completely fell in love with taking pictures. Now that i’m in my 20s i still hold that same passion and i want to try to get out and shoot photos as much as i can.
The main services i provide are Portraiture, Event coverage and Lifestyle product photos.
Clients want their events captured in a real and natural way, with all their emotions and special moments capture. I make sure they get beautiful photos that tell a story they can look back on and cherish.
I think im most proud of how far ive come in this hobby, I went from taking awful photos to now beautiful prints that i frame on my wall. I’m also proud of all the events i’ve shot and the interesting clients and people i have gotten to work with through this line of work.
I think i want to let future clients to know that i have a huge passion for lifestyle photography and hiking and exploring and that i would like to combine these two passions. A few years ago i did a non official photoshoot for Arc’teryx in the mountains of Squamish B.C. and I’m really proud of how those photo’s turned out and i would love to do more photo shoots like that in the future.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I have found that word of mouth seems to be the most effective way to get more clients for me. Let people know you’re a photographer and let the word spread. When you do get those clients make sure that you crush the project and overdeliver, Also don’t be afraid to donate your time not everyone has deep pockets and sometimes its fun to shoot an event just for the hell of it.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
There are a lot of pros to it, your you’re own boss, you’re doing what your passionate about and it ultimately provides a lot of life satisfaction.
