We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nat Girsberger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nat, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A few years back I’ve decided I wanted to spend time alone in the desert. No one really got it, but no one really got it when I moved to New York from Switzerland at 18 either. I trusted my gut and have spent months in Joshua Tree National Park since that initial visit. The desert has inspired me beyond measure, and my latest Oracle deck, Wild Whispers, transpired thanks to my relationship with nature there. I felt I had access to the deepest messages within me out in the open by being alone in the national park. The project turned out to be my favorite and most honest work to date.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Brooklyn- and desert-based Swiss artist working in design, illustration and collage. My work interprets the unseen and translates earth omens. I like to visually explores profound themes beyond the edge of perception. My intuitive work encourages viewers to connect to their unseen potential – vast as imagined desert dreamscapes – and go beyond what they thought was accessible to them. As a avid students and teacher of yoga and meditation, I let thes practices seep into my work. I am most proud of my card decks, Radiant Wilds Tarot and Wild Whispers published by Rockpool Publishing and distributed by Simon and Schuster. They were translated into multiple languages. These projects contain a slice of my core and present a tool to tap into intuition and self-knowledge for practitioners.
I also create album covers working with my synesthesia, an ability to sense colors based on sound and touch.
I was awarded a greencard for extraordinary ability in the arts to work in the United States and have created for clients such as Universal Music Group, Google and Michaels. New York City exhibitions include a 3-story installation and gallery show at Showfields, the 2018 solo show ‘Close Your Eyes’ at the Storefront Project Gallery, and her 2017 solo show ‘Transient Terrain’ at Ivy Brown Gallery. I’ve also exhibited in several group shows, at i.e Yale University, Subliminal Projects, Carrie Able Gallery and many more.
My work has appeared in various media across the globe, including The Rollling Stone, Vogue, Whitehot Magazine, Hyperallergic, Pitchfork, among various others.
I am also the VP of Creative at Oh Norman!, Kaley Cuoco’s dog brand. It’s an amazing company that gives back to rescue dogs in need and produces all-natural, vet-approved products. I work with a team of amazing women trying to make the world a better place.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission has always been to connect viewers to their deepest core and full potential, which to me is one and the same with the core of the world/nature. The goal here is to allow us to tap into our vast knowledge within, which can provide all the answers we seek – creativity to me is the perfect access point.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best collaborations I have worked on were ones where the commissioner has allowed me the freedom to do what I do best. I myself have found that letting go of trying to control everything and instead let creativity move me in new and unexpected ways produces the most interesting work. I’ve also tried to let go of being the judge of my own work and simply make. So, I suppose, we should give artists space and trust to create and explore.
