We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fred (fconthebeat) Council a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Fred (FcOnTheBeat), looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I am fortunate enough to earn a full time living from my creative work. As a musician, music producer, and engineer, the road leading to this point has not at all be the easiest, but will and belief were the 2 key benefits to getting here.
I will say that I kinda had a head start, being as though I’ve been a professional musician since I was a teenager. The lead me to want to explore the other facets of the music business. I ultimately landed on creating the music that I was paid to replicate so often.
The process from drummer to studio owner took years. The one thing that I can say helped me the most was the idea of always looking for ways to provide value first. It allowed every artist and client I work with to understand that my focus is always to deliver the best product possible. It’s like a cheat code.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My Name is Fred (FcONTheBeat) Council. I’m a music producer, film composer, and audio engineer dedicated to helping artists and filmmakers bring their creative visions to life. My work focuses on not just producing high-quality sound, but also ensuring that each project connects with the intended audience in a meaningful way.
In 2021, I founded WavLab Recording Company, a studio that has since become a hub for creativity in the Cleveland community. Through WavLab, I’ve been able to provide artists with the tools, expertise, and environment they need to refine their craft and elevate their work.
What sets me apart is my hands-on, invested approach. I don’t just focus on the technical side of production—I genuinely care about the success of the artists I work with. My goal is to help them develop their sound, achieve their vision, and create something that stands out.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it’s seeing the artists vision come to life in real time. It’s always a great experience to help make an idea a reality.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To me, the answer is very very simple. Get behind those who are right where you are. People often overlook the local, and regional geniuses for the names that the world is always talking about. Take the extra time, and MONEY to enjoy the artists and creatives that are right around the corner.
