We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Baresel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
So I recently decided that I wanted to become a full time music festival goer; meaning that I will go to these festivals to vend, perform, live paint, or work! I currently work in the service industry, which is the perfect job for an artist as you can get most of the days off you need. I am leaving for Iceland at the beginning of April, and the day I return I will be leaving for a festival where I applied to paint, perform, and vend! I was very inspired by James (the owner of Three Little Birds Pinecones) who makes his living selling his art full time at these events.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, my businesses are called “Space Baby” (flow arts) and “Space Wares” (art). They are spelled “SP8C3” because three is my life path number, and eight is the number of abundance! As a life path three, my calling is to be creative. I offer LED flow and fire flow, it would be easier to name the props I can’t use at this point! My favorites are hula hoop, Russian grip fans, poi, silk fans, and dragon staff. I also paint, I would consider my style on the visionary side, with a hint of cloudscape. My jewelry style is very maximalist. I definitely make jewelry for other maximalist hippies! What sets me apart from others and also what I am most proud of; is that I do not follow trends or other people’s way of doing things. My work is special because it is my own and I truly love everything I create. When you buy a piece of my art, or watch one of my performances, you are receiving a piece of my heart. My goal is always to give others the strength to be themselves.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be free. I want to inspire others to be free. So many of us get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the world. All I can hope for myself and others is that we can all express ourselves freely, spend time with our loved ones, and put our time and money where it truly matters.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
For a long time, early on in my artistic journey, I was very afraid to express myself. When I went to art school I had to make things that would get me the grades. When I first started making jewelry I felt that I had to make things that would sell. I was taught during this time that my art was unworthy if it didn’t make a political statement, or if it couldn’t be digestible to everyone. It was after I went to Resonance Music and Arts Festival in 2018, and saw visionary art in person, saw other people dressed like me, and hundreds of LED flow props flying around, I realized there was a place for me in the world. I did a whole presentation on this beautiful community at DAAP. They laughed at me, but I am laughing now, with a degree, and an endless amount of joy.
