We were lucky to catch up with Calvin Spades recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Building a sustainable brand in New York’s nightlife industry is particularly challenging due to the intense competition. Each company aims to be known for hosting the “best” parties with large crowds, high spenders, and top-tier talent. However, every element that makes an event memorable—the venue, performers, decor, photography, videography, and social media presence—comes at a cost. Within my company, I’ve implemented three core strategies to achieve profitability and growth.
The first key is establishing relationships with the right partners: identifying venues, talent, sponsors, and media that align with our vision and can help us scale sustainably. Keeping costs low is essential, especially in the early stages when refining the target market. For example, when I started, I covered the full cost of venues myself, as I had no existing partnerships. This significantly impacted profit margins. However, over time, as trust was established, venues now contract and pay my company to organize and host events—marking a complete turnaround and creating a new revenue stream with minimal risk.
The second step is cultivating a sense of “FOMO” (fear of missing out) around our events through a strong social media presence. By consistently sharing reels, stories, and posts that capture the excitement, we keep our audience engaged and eager for the next event.
The third strategy is delivering more value than expected. In a saturated market, standing out often requires offering clients something extra. For instance, some of our most popular events have been boat parties around the Statue of Liberty featuring house music DJs. Priced at $25—a fraction of the usual $45 for a typical tour—these events not only sell out quickly but also encourage word-of-mouth promotion, further driving sales and brand recognition.

Calvin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a music producer/DJ/entrepreneur & founder of Post Up NYC LLC. Post Up NYC is a forward-thinking nightlife brand dedicated to creating immersive and unique event experiences across New York City. We got our start in the industry by recognizing a gap in sustainable, high-value events that emphasize quality and a memorable atmosphere over typical party elements. Post Up NYC focuses on carefully curated events that bring together high-energy house music, distinctive venues, and a vibrant crowd, all while keeping costs manageable and appealing to a range of attendees.
We provide full-scale event services, including venue selection, music programming, and visual media support, and we handle every detail to ensure our events stand out. Our goal is to partner with venues, artists, and sponsors who share our vision of delivering an experience that feels exceptional yet accessible.
What sets Post Up NYC apart is our dedication to value-driven, unforgettable events that make attendees feel like they’re part of something exclusive without an overwhelming price tag.
We’re proud of our ability to build a community through innovative, high-energy events that balance affordability with quality. Post Up NYC is more than just a nightlife brand—it’s a fresh approach to sustainable entertainment in one of the world’s most competitive cities.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most challenging yet rewarding moments in my journey came during New York Fashion Week on February 8th, 2025. I had planned an exclusive afterparty, but just weeks before the event, the venue canceled due to a conflict with a larger competitor. My business partner, who had already confirmed 60+ models and guests, was understandably concerned. But I remained calm, assuring him that I’d find a solution.
The next day, I secured another venue. Problem solved—so I thought. By Monday, that venue also backed out under similar circumstances, leaving me with 100+ tickets sold and only days to go.
With the clock ticking, I managed to find a third venue that initially seemed perfect. However, they were asking for fee that was above-budget. Instead of conceding, I saw this as an opportunity to think strategically. I quickly sourced a fourth venue option resulting in a friendly bidding competition between both venues. By highlighting the value and exposure the event would bring, I negotiated terms that worked in my favor. Ultimately, I secured the ideal venue without paying any deposit, turning a high-pressure situation into a mutually beneficial agreement that ensured the event’s success.
This experience taught me that overcoming setbacks requires creativity, determination, and confidence. It reinforced the importance of adaptability in the fast-paced world of nightlife and event planning, showing that every challenge is an opportunity in disguise. It also highlighted the power of negotiation, quick thinking, and building strong relationships, all of which are essential for long-term success. Ultimately, this moment underscored that turning obstacles into opportunities and setbacks into lessons fuels future growth.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been other clients. Word-of-mouth referrals and recommendations from those who have experienced our events firsthand have been invaluable in growing Post Up NYC’s presence and credibility.
Expanding on that, I have two main types of clientele: the patrons who attend our events and the venues that partner with Post Up NYC LLC. For patrons, building relationships outside of events is key. I make it a point build genuine trust with them by spending time with them outside of these events. This approach not only encourages them to keep coming back but also inspires them to bring their friends, expanding our reach organically.
For venues, my top priority is ensuring profitability by attracting large crowds and keeping them entertained and dancing throughout the night to drive bar sales and keep the revenue flowing as I DJ. The nightlife industry is tightly connected, and word spreads quickly among venue owners. When I host successful events that deliver both attendance and energy, venue owners are eager to recommend me to others, fostering a cycle of trust, reliability, and continuous growth for Post Up NYC LLC.
