Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jake Edwards. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jake, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
This is something I’ve often wondered, yet have never had the opportunity to convey to the public. I guess it is time. I have been photographing Northern California for a decade now, with the initial intention of posting pictures for friends to stay caught up with current views that had moved away. That quickly shifted focus to inspiring those who saw my work to go out and experience the wonders of nature for themselves. I don’t know if people realize just how much effort is put into the process of planning shots, traveling to get them, editing pictures, posting them and then replying to comments. A few hour trip can easily equate to a full day of work. My body definitely feels it, but my mind doesn’t. I love it. I live for it. I truly feel I am living out my purpose in this life, with a God given eye to capture and share the beauty I am blessed to witness on a daily basis. If I am fortunate enough to leave behind a legacy, I think this will be it. I also think it is worth mentioning that I am 35 and have had cancer 4 times in the past 6 years. Cancer only fueled my fire to capture life in the most beautiful way I could; with my camera. It kept me up and moving for the fear of missing beautiful sights when I didn’t want to get out of bed. Not to mention the amazing community I have been blessed with through family, friends and people I’ve met on social media, who have always been supportive and encouraging through both my photography and cancer journey. I feel as if my photography is a small way I can give back to those who supported me. Lastly, my greatest passion is being a father, and capturing my beautiful daughter growing up. Those images will always be the most special to me. Thanks for reading, and go enjoy some sights.

Jake, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in Lake Almanor, Ca and never realized the beauty of it until I moved back after college. I started going out to watch sunsets every night and taking pictures with my iPhone 4. Soon after, I bought a camera and started having the time of my life. I kept upgrading my kit until I got to a place that I was happy with, which is where I’m at now. My aim is to capture the best possible images of scenes I see in Northern California, and beyond.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say getting a shot I planned for, and the weather played along. It’s also rewarding when friends message me asking if I saw a sight like a sunset or the moon, and I did. It’s motivates me to share those images even more.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The only thing I’ve really done is stay true to myself and try to create my own unique style. It’s always rewarding when I get told someone knew an image online was mine before they saw the name attached to it. That makes me feel like I’m doing a good job separating myself from the ever increasing rise in popularity of photographers these days. One would only hope that they could be recognizable among all of the incredibly talented people in their field, and I feel I have done it pretty well thus far.
