We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Just Mary. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Just below.
Hi Just, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned by watching and studying others, I come from a family of artists, engineers, etc. My older brother Dre would take me to studios and I’ll watch his process, I was 14, and to me i was just hanging with my big brother, spending time. So indirectly it became a full circle moment when it was time for me to get into music, By the time I was 16/17 me and some friends from Highschool created a group and at that point I had an idea, because of the prior experience.
I never tried to speed up my learning process, I’ve always believed in repetition and understanding everyone learns different and never within the same
period as peers. It always been that. I wouldn’t change a thing, I wouldn’t be the artist I am if I tried to cheat or try to fast learn something which I probably would’ve never got doing so. No matter what it is, sports, school, people or concepts, I’ve always been ten toes down in my process for sure and never questioning timing.

Just, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up in NYC (Brooklyn). I started my musical journey in high school (16) with friends and by the time I was 18, that’s when i knew it was something I wanted a career in. I always had this connection to artistry, whether it was illustration, Film, Acting, it just so happens music was the higher calling than the rest.
I’ve always been Unapologetically myself, authentic, great work ethic and I know what I want, my discipline at being great and being a student has always been
the one thing that can’t be compared to no one else. Taking the performances, the recordings or even scrapping ideas that are exceptionally good but I’ve always wanted MORE.
The only hard part being an artist is finding the balance with real life and not neglecting your passion; As well with feeling like I’m good enough, constantly
asking myself “Why Me” and how come I don’t feel as confident as I do in songs than I do in my real life. Music is a piece of me, that allowed me to explore
different parts of me I never thought I’d have. The best example I can reference that will allow people to feel inclined to pay attention to me is I study the best of the best, doing so, I can’t fail and make quality music for people who has intrusive thoughts that can’t find the words to say it daily or people who never feel seen, whether its by family, the world or even within yourself. I am Just Mary

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The reception of live performances and validation from your peers when you put your blood sweat and tears in it, knowing you created the best version of
said sound within the idea. I appreciate just the overall process of knowing my music can have an effect on anyone and allow some form of connection to be
synchronized even if your a stranger or distant friend.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Definitely around 2020 when the pandemic happened! Prior to it, I had all these performances and opportunities lined up, and when the world shut down, I felt like everything I worked for just went down drain. I kind of gave up. But then I realized this was the first time i had time to conceptually think about projects. So it was a blessing in disguise. I was able to create my debut ep “Late Bloomer” Doing so I was able to check boxes within myself as well as in the marketplace to have a body of work that can represent me to the fullest with the little and spontaneous time I had. There were no plans for project ever, well at least to that point. But I’m glad
it happened the way it did. I wouldn’t be me without it.
