We recently connected with Yuchen Ou and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Yuchen, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on involved creating a custom piece for a client in memory of her late cat. This experience was particularly significant to me because it allowed me to help someone honor and cherish the memory of a beloved pet.
Context: A client approached me with the desire to create a personalized item that would serve as a tribute to her recently deceased cat. Understanding the deep bond between pet owners and their animals, I recognized the importance of this project and was committed to delivering something truly special.
My Role: I utilized a technique where I wrapped different types of yarn around wire to form the cat’s body. By twisting and shaping the wire, I was able to create a lifelike pose. I then crafted the facial features and meticulously painted the fur patterns to capture the unique appearance of her cat.
Outcome: Upon presenting the finished piece, the client was deeply moved and expressed profound gratitude. She mentioned that the piece not only honored her cat’s memory but also provided her with comfort and a tangible connection to her beloved pet.
Reflection: This project was meaningful to me because it went beyond mere craftsmanship; it was about empathy, understanding, and helping someone navigate their grief. Being able to create something that offered solace and preserved cherished memories reinforced my belief in the power of personalized work and its impact on individuals’ lives.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always loved animals—they bring so much warmth and joy into our lives. I have two cats and a dog, and they are like family to me. Like any pet owner, I wish they could stay with me forever. The thought of carrying a little piece of them with me, whether at the office or while traveling, felt incredibly comforting. That’s what inspired me to start this journey.
I began exploring ways to create a tangible keepsake of beloved pets and discovered a unique crafting method. By carefully wrapping different types of yarn around wire and shaping it through delicate twists, I could form miniature pet sculptures. Because of my background is a designer, I can also meticulously hand-paint the facial features and fur patterns based on the photos provided by pet owners, making each piece a heartfelt and personalized creation.
What makes my work special is the small, intricate nature of these creations. They can be used as charms on a bag, hung on a Christmas tree, or simply kept as a treasured memento. For pet lovers, this is more than just an ornament—it’s a way to hold onto the beautiful memories of their furry companions. Whether for yourself or as a gift for a friend or family member, it’s something deeply meaningful, filled with love and nostalgia.
To me, this work is not just about crafting; it’s about warmth, comfort, and the joy of remembering those we love. Being able to help others preserve the memory of their pets in such a special way is what makes this journey so fulfilling for me.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the profound connection I can foster between individuals and their cherished memories, especially through personalized creations. Crafting custom pieces that encapsulate the essence of a beloved pet allows me to provide clients with a tangible keepsake, offering comfort and a lasting tribute to their companions. This process not only celebrates the unique bond between humans and animals but also brings warmth and solace to those mourning a loss. Being able to contribute to such meaningful moments in people’s lives fills my work with purpose and joy.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
1. Provide Financial Support and Fair Compensation
Ensuring that artists receive fair compensation for their work is crucial. This includes paying artists appropriately for their creations and performances, which enables them to sustain their practice and contribute meaningfully to the community. For instance, legislative efforts like the Living Wage for Musicians Act aim to ensure musicians receive fair compensation for streaming, which could help them afford essential needs like health insurance.
2. Offer Accessible Healthcare and Benefits
Many artists lack access to health insurance and other benefits. Providing affordable healthcare options and benefits can significantly improve their well-being and allow them to focus on their creative endeavors. Organizations like the American Association of Independent Music offer group health insurance options to support artists.
