We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Donita McCants a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Donita , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
We started Dr. Donita’s Veterinary Concierge Services because I wanted a way to bring premium 1st class doorstep pet care to my clients. But also maintain a better work life balance for myself and my family. Burnout was starting to hit which is very common in our field. As well as mental health issues. I wanted to fall back in love with vet med and practice medicine my way and on my time! It was blossomed and we have grown a beautiful tribe the last year!

Dr. Donita , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dr. Donita McCants and I was born military at fort Bragg, North Carolina. But I was raised in the metro Atlanta area. I went to the university of Georgia for undergrad (2011) and Tuskegee University for vet school (2015). I think one thing that sets us apart is our transparency and community involvement. Most people will say I’ve never met a vet outside of a hospital. Or they have never met an African American vet so I try my best to be active and represent that diversity issue with my social media platforms. I am most proud of my blog page “Ask Dr. Donita” where I started answering pet questions and educating pet parents on Instagram. That continued to blossom into more opportunities and lead us to start the practice. We continue to evolve and are now starting a YouTube channel to chronicle our many adventures on the road!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My road to becoming a doctor wasn’t linear. I had to take my board exam a few times which altered my route straight into my career and field. That pivot was a humbling experience but a much needed break for me to breathe and enjoy life. My son was very young and I had been running and in school for 8 years. It was a much needed break that I didn’t realize was so necessary.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes I had to do relief for at hospitals for a while until I felt comfortable to go out on my own. When I got to the point I was too tired to give the business it’s all I decided to take the risk and go full time.
