Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
One of my most defining moments and notable achievement is my involvement in establishing Social Services at Martin Luther King Community Healthcare’s Ambulatory Outpatient Department. Since it’s initial start in 2017, I was established as the first Social Worker for Ambulatory Services at MLKCH.
Recognizing the importance of South LA’s community lack of resources, I incorporated the Social Determinants of Health into MLKCH Ambulatory Services to help address our patients social needs and assisting them access resources in support. I established a comprehensive outreach program at MLKCH Ambulatory Services to connect patients and community members experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, education and most importantly medical services.
I became the pioneer and key leader of MLKCH successful Recipe For Health program, helping our patients address food insecurity and healthier food options,
With this addition, I have helped bridge the gap between under-served communities and vital resources need within the community of South LA.

Alex, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey in social services began with a deep-rooted desire to make a difference. Growing up in South LA, my family and I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by many South LA residents, including poverty, lack of access to healthy foods, healthcare disparities and limited resources. These experiences fueled my determination to help those in need and address the underlying issues that perpetuate social inequality.
From an early age, I recognized the power of a community and the importance of collective action. My commitment to service led me to pursue a career in social services, where I knew I could have a direct impact on the lives of those individuals and families less fortunate.
After completing my education in Sociology and dedicating 9 years helping the under-served communities of Kern County, I returned to South LA, armed with a deep understanding of the community’s strengths and challenges.
With more than 15 years of social services experience working with the under-served population from Kern County to Los Angeles County. With my strong passion for helping others and addressing social needs, I worked tirelessly to create positive changes and improve the lives of individuals and families in South LA’s community.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Playing a crucial role in building partnerships among different community organizations that have the same goals and aiming at addressing social needs. Establishing a professional relationship and collaboration with local organizations, government agencies and local business that tackle issues such as homelessness, food insecurity, youth empowerment, access to affordable housing, but most importantly community advocacy.
Through these initiatives, I have been able to mobilize resources for our MLKCH patients and community members of South LA.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Having an unwavering commitment to addressing social needs positively can impact your community. Through your leadership, compassion, determination and innovative approach you can continue to be driving force for positive change. Continuing your journey and remain dedicated to building a community where everyone has access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
