We were lucky to catch up with Keith Tippman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keith, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Overtime we have an decrease in math fluency, reflecting significant learning loss during the pandemic. Even advanced students are struggling with fundamental concepts that make it more difficult to conceptually understand higher level content. Specifically, students struggling with operations like multiplication, or adding/subtracting fractions have a hard time understanding Algebra, and this problem compounds as they progress into geometry and calculus courses.
Keith, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We have been in the tutoring industry for over ten years. Most of our educational practice is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. We had gotten our start working with a larger tutoring business, and have been collectively tutoring under the StudyTime Tutoring name for 6 years. We pride ourselves on continuity and retention of high quality educators. We believe that working with the same student year over year gives us insight about a student’s educational background which helps us cater lessons to an individual’s needs.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Everyone that works at StudyTime is a managing member of the company, and all four of us are full-time professional tutors. With over 10 years of experience we have been able to understand the specific challenges of curricula across various school in the Bay Area. We had all become friends while working at a larger tutoring company, and because we were all seeking to make a long term profession, we had decided to beginning managing our tutoring practices independently; however, given our various areas of expertise we decided to collectivize our resources and work under the StudyTime Tutoring name. Aaron Goodacre, for example, is an expert SAT/ACT tutor, while I focus on humanities such as AP English or AP History, and Jared Cacho/Phill Coren primarily teach higher level math and science courses.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing has been word of mouth referrals, which is a fantastic reflection of the quality of our services.
