Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jodi Mason. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jodi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
It was a lot of trail and error mostly. I could have watched Youtube videos or tutorials, but podcasting is a lot of trial and error. You don’t know what people will like until you try it. You just have to do it and hope that people listen. I think that having a creative and open mind was the most essential things because it allowed me to pivot when something didn’t work out. I didn’t get upset. I moved on and tried something new. The hardest thing to overcome was procrastination. I had to make myself to do it, and convince myself that I could succeed if I just tried.

Jodi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a solo podcaster and my podcast is That Tennessee Feeling. I wanted to showcase the Volunteer state and talk about more then just Nashville, Chattanooga, Memphis, and Knoxville. The state is so diverse, and has such a rich history. I have been able to spotlight the amazing small towns, make some new friends along the process, and keep the history alive. I am the most proud that this podcast has lead me to some other projects that I have gotten to work on and network with some amazing people. I have had the podcast for over 2 years now, and you can find me on Spotify, I Heart Radio, Apple, Goodpods, and Pandora. You can also find That Tennessee Feeling on TikTok, Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I graduated college in 2006, and got a great job… then the recession hit. I had a useless degree at that point. I had to figure out a whole new way of life since everything was a lot harder at that point. I went from one career into another that I never dreamed of being in, and haven’t looked back. I don’t regret getting my degree because it was my goal, but I do wish I had gotten a different one if I had know I was only going to use it for such a short time.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience by being persistent and present. You can’t build an audience if the audience does not see you. Lives and reels are great ways for people to see you. I think that there is a fine balance between posting too much and just enough, but you still have to have a presence to gain the audience you want. I have also realized that you get as much from social media as you put into it.
