We recently connected with Chinenye Ezurike and have shared our conversation below.
Chinenye, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
For 10 years, I worked tirelessly to prove that fashion design wasn’t just a hobby—it was my career, my purpose, and a fruitful one at that. As a first-generation immigrant, I had to fight against the traditional expectations that only careers in medicine or law were truly “respectable.”
In 2020, I took a major step forward by opening my first physical workshop in Lagos, Nigeria. After two years of steady growth, I knew it was time to scale into the bridal industry—a natural next step for ZURIK. I believed in this vision so strongly that I was willing to put everything on the line.
I turned to my parents for an investment of $80K-$100K to help make it happen, but once again, they doubted me. They told me it wasn’t time. But I knew better. I had built ZURIK from the ground up, and if I had waited for permission or approval, I wouldn’t have come this far. So, I made the boldest move of my career: I invested every penny of my savings into launching my bridal showroom.
And it was the best decision I ever made.
Today, my bridal showroom is flourishing and growing, a testament to what happens when you trust your instincts, bet on yourself, and refuse to take “no” for an answer. Looking back, I have never felt more accomplished. That investment wasn’t just about money—it was about believing in my own timing, my vision, and my ability to create the future I dreamed of.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Chinenye Ezurike, Nigerian Born and relocated to the USA(Chicago) with my entire family when i was 11 for a better life. I Founded Zurik originally known as Zurikgirl In 2013, Zurik is dedicated to the art of crafting handmade dresses for Bridal, formal, party and Everyday garment. granting our clients access to a world of exclusive and enduring designs. Our primary mission revolves around the celebration of individuality and the empowerment of women’s self-expression. We also have a sub-division brand Zurik wholesale production where we help independent and small up and coming brands with small garment production. when i first started my brand finding a manufacturing company that would do a small batch quantity was hard, every company wanted you to start with MOQ of 100 units or more and its just not possible financially if you are start up brand or designer. I am most proud of the journey it took me to get here, knowing that I never gave up on myself and now I get to do what I love dressing women all over the world and making them feel beautiful.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
At 16, I made a mistake that became one of my biggest regrets. Influenced by the wrong crowd, I attempted to shoplift clothing from Macy’s—House of Deréon jeans and tops—with a friend and was caught. That moment not only disappointed me but deeply affected my parents’ trust in me. I believe it played a major role in my mother’s lack of support for my fashion dreams, as she dismissed anything related to clothing or design afterward. I often wonder how different my journey might have been if that incident hadn’t happened—if I had been allowed to study or minor in fashion, accept my London School of Fashion offer after undergrad, build stronger industry connections, or even receive financial support from my parents, who were capable of providing it. Though I’ve built a thriving career despite these challenges, I still carry regret over that moment and hope to fully move past it one day.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to bring ideas to life and doing it exactly how I want it. Also impacting others – Seeing how my work influences people, whether through confidence, empowerment, or inspiration. I am also building a Legacy, creating something that lasts, represents my values, and paves the way for future creatives.
