We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marquita Owens a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marquita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I was on a wellness journey to take back my health, I used to ride my bike past this particular cycle studio wondering what it looked like on the inside but always made excuse why not to go in until one day I built up the courage to go in. The next day as riding pass like I normally did I went in a got information on the classes and decided to sign up for a ride. That ride ended up feeling like the worst decision on my life, it was so hard and challenging it had me questioning my whole fitness journey. Funny thing is I had no clue that this was the 1st day of the reset of my life! I started attending classes, crazy right, it was something about have strong I felt mentally. One day riding with a friend she was like Marquita you could teach, in my head I knew there was no way I could do this but her belief in my made me go get certified. Several months went by and I decided to audition for an instructor position, boy was I disappointed. After my audition they told me I was too shy and they couldn’t hire me but to come to classes and study them. This wasn’t what I wanted to hear but I knew I wanted to grow. After a few months of practicing I built up my courage to audition again and I killed it! Who was this girl, where did she come from, that day I found my voice and never looked back. So glad people saw something in me that I didn’t know was there, which brought me to where I am today.

Marquita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the industry 25 years go when I went to school to be a cosmetologist. 10 years ago I took a weight loss journey that helped me to take my life and my health back. I combined my love of hair and fitness and turned it into a business. In 2020 the studio I was once an instructor at was closing and I had been wanting to open up a wellness salon and this was my chance. I asked the owner if I could take over the space that gave me my 1st start the whole reason why I was teaching in the 1st place. In Aug of 2020 I had my grand opening on my birthday. I have the opportunity to help other people to take back their lives daily and it’s the best feeling in the world. My studio takes a holistic approach to wellness that’s what sets me apart from many other business in my field. I focus on the fitness, nutrition and health of hair. I want people to know me from not only what I do but the lives I’ve help in the process of building my business.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What built my reputation within my market was being transparent with my own weight loss journey. I became a person who people could trust and look up to. My how journey was logged so people was able to see me transform right before their eyes. I’ve shared what has worked and my struggles.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clients was being the kind of business people felt comfortable being at, a business they trusted, a business that felt like family.
