We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lisa And Suzanne Peasley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lisa and Suzanne below.
Lisa and Suzanne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
We didn’t actually conceptualize the idea of taking old liquor and wine bottles and turning them into candles. That was the idea of the original owner who we worked with in law enforcement. She was injured on the job and was looking for something to do with her time and came up with the idea. We watched in awe from the sidelines for years as she perfected the craft and grew her business. When she was ready to move on to new endeavors, we had the opportunity to try our hand at it. In the 4 years that we have owned the business, we have learned so much about cutting glass, manufacturing candles, and trying our hardest to save thousands of bottles from the landfills.
Lisa and Suzanne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
At Grumpy Dog Candle Co, we take old bottles and turn them into candles. We cut, sand, and polish ourselves while maintaining the integrity of the original bottle. We then fill the bottle with 100% soy wax, certified clean burning scent oil, and an all natural wick, making a fun and unique item. In todays world, we all have so much. When it comes to trying to find a gift for someone it gets hard as most of us don’t “need” anything – but we still want to give something special to those who mean something to us. Giving a candle in your persons favorite bottle is a fun way to show them you care. They make great gifts, statement pieces on a bar, man cave, or she shed. One of our favorite things is custom orders when customers bring us a bottle that they shared with someone special in their life and we take that exact bottle and make them a candle, vase, or ash tray out of it – making those memories live on.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth and referrals really is the best compliment to a small business owner. We get many new customers from those who were gifted one of our candles or who saw a candle in their friends home and knew they needed one as well. We do business with wineries and distilleries – taking their empty bottles from tasting rooms and turning them into candles. They make an amazing gift for the business to gift their employees, top customers, wine club members, etc. But they also make a fun souvenir to take home after a day enjoying tastings with friends. We gain lots of new customers from those who see our candles in these businesses.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We aren’t the only candle company around. We try and stand out by producing a beautiful product that is something unique and different that can hold special memories, provide a smile, and help keep a little something out of our overflowing landfills. We take pride in our craftsmanship and take the time to make sure each candle is given all of our attention.
