We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, thanks for joining us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
I’d like to notate two great men as individuals I admire. First being the late, great Muhammad Ali. I am admirable to him for standing up for what he believed in throughout his career. Muhammad Ali used his notable boxing career and his contagious personality to gain the attention of millions of fans in order to spread his message of having purpose and the vision of freedom. He was a courageous & charismatic family man and he definitely stood up for great causes and impacted so many people.
Additionally, I’d like to give credit to Floyd Mayweather. Another notable boxer with an undefeated boxing career. For many reasons, I study the ways in which Floyd Mayweather built up his career. He is a very intelligent man with the business mind to be able to keep manifesting his dreams. Through all the years of his career, he made sure to take the careful steps to protect himself and gain assets. He leveraged the business world of boxing and set himself up to where he could build a legacy, live comfortably, & set forth generational wealth for his family.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Joshua Brown. I grew up in the small town of Prentiss, Mississippi. Opportunities in Prentiss were barren, so I was forced to make something out of nothing. I decided to step into my dreams, rather than becoming a product of my environment. I am a husband and a father of 2 beautiful girls. I own a boxing gym in Hattiesburg, Mississippi called “JB Boxing & Fitness” where I am a boxing coach, personal trainer, and fight promoter. With these roles I have also become a father figure to my community and a mentor. I am a God fearing leader.
I started walking into my purpose because growing up, I held a lot of anger. I needed a positive outlet to channel my emotions, and a vehicle to take me where I needed to be in life. I was a boxer myself first, but as I learned the world of boxing; in and outside the ring, I used all those tools to lead me where I am currently. My versatility has been key in setting me apart from others in this field, because I leverage my knowledge in order to be multi-dimensional.
With all of the roles that I have, I am most proud of my ability to have a positive impact on those I am around. Whether we meet on the side of business or whether I stay in the corner as a coach, I give my all to those I am around and make sure they never leave as the same person.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When I was younger, I had a dream of making my own career as a boxer. I invested myself and trained tirelessly. Ultimately, God spoke to me and told me I was meant to take a slightly different route for a greater path. I sacrificed growing my boxing career and even quitting the job I had at the time, in order to become a boxing coach. I went from training clients from my home and various public locations, to owning a gym with a co-partner, and to now owning a gym of my own. Now, I have grown as a fight promoter, with my next big amateur boxing show coming April 19, 2025. Had I not followed my path, I would not have been able to grow and reach all of these milestones that God had planned for me.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn in my journey is that the things I’ve always needed to continue to grow in life, did not always need to come secondary to partnering with others. Growth can be beneficial in numbers, but I have learned that with certain paths in life; God requires us to walk it alone, even if it take us a little longer.
