We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jada Sawatzky a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jada, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to give people timeless images that capture the unique moments of their lives, allowing them to relive their stories for generations to come.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Jayda Sawatzky, a photographer based in Maple Grove, Minnesota. For me, photography is about telling your unique story in a way that feels authentic to you.
My love for photography began in childhood, fueled by digital, disposable, and instant print cameras. But the moment that truly pushed me to invest in my first ‘big girl’ camera was the birth of my second baby. That’s when it really hit me—time moves too fast. I wanted to find a way to slow it down, or at least hold onto the fleeting moments a little longer.
I got my Canon and started practicing on our German Shepherd, my newborn, and my then 4- or 5-year-old son. As I grew more confident, I began working with models and offering free sessions to build experience. Fast forward two years, and I’ve had the honor of documenting families, seniors, small wedding ceremonies, and so many special milestones.

I focus on capturing the in-between moments—the quiet, the laughter, and the little connections that make life meaningful. My goal is to create images that reflect your genuine experiences and become cherished memories for years to come.
I believe the best photos come from capturing life as it naturally unfolds, in the places where you feel most at home. Whether it’s a cozy morning, a family gathering, or a simple moment of joy, I’m here to document it all with warmth and authenticity.
I want everyone to know that there’s no ‘perfect’ way to prepare for photos. Life isn’t about perfection—it’s about the messy, the imperfect, the happy, the sad, and every emotion in between. Your story is beautiful just as it is, and I’m here to capture it exactly that way.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective way I have grown clientel is by word of mouth, buissness cards and lots of one on one interaction at playgrounds, parks, grocery stores and libraries. Just getting to know people and sharing what I do for work mostly.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes! I have been so grateful to have amazing mentors (Chasing sunsets LLC- Britt & Alex Hall, MMB Phitography (inspiration), Nathan Chanski, & the “called to both” podcast by Joy Michelle.
I also love the documentary on Netflix called Photographer.
Books that I base my buissness of of would be “How to win friends & influence people” “Atomic Habits”.
