We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Richelle Mclaughlin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Richelle below.
Richelle, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes I take vacations, in fact, I take time away from work every quarter.
As a High Performance Coach, I know how important it is to give your body, mind and soul time to relax, release and recharge.
Have you ever had a problem or challenge that you can not seem to find a solution to and then all of the sudden the solution comes to you while you are on a walk, or playing with your kids?
It can feel terrifying to take time off however, sometimes, stepping away is the best way to move forward. Clarity often comes when we give ourselves the space to rest and reflect.
To stay at maximum productivity and creativity, the goal is to take off a long weekend every 3 months and 1 full week twice a year. This gives the body and mind time to decompress, rest and reset. You don’t have to take a big vacation or spend a lot of money, it is simply the act of removing yourself from the day to day work enviroment that will lay an amazing foundation to come back and kill it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I help my clients , professionally and personally, to live life with passion and purpose. If you have dreams and goals but don’t know how to get started or maybe you know what you want but don’t have enough energy or time to make it happen, that’s where I can help.
As a Certified High Performance Coach I provide tools and strategies that help my clients overcome the obstacles that can get in the way of reaching their highest potential. I work primarily with professional women who are struggling “to do it all.”
Watching my clients transform from overwhelmed, defeated and discouraged into a person who is clear on their vision, have strong strategy to accomplish their vision and the courage to execute their vision is what validates and brings a strong sense of accomplishment to me.
I create You Squared Coaching in order to continue my mission on empowering women to reach their highest potential.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For the first time in my professional career I was fired. FIRED!! I stood there in complete shock. I am a “rule follower,” a team player, and have always come to the table with new ideas and solutions to challenges. I am the type of person who appreciates feedback and am open to coaching.
This hit me out of the blue and I definitely did not see it coming. I had not had any coaching from my management, no warning, nothing. The flood of emotions and feeling surging through me at that moment was something had had never experienced.
Needless to say, that put me into an immediate need to pivot what I was going to continue to do with my career. After mourning the situations, I came to realize that this was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. This event pushed me to take my coaching business full time and freed up my time to focus on building my coaching clientele.
What looked and felt like the worst thing that could happen ended up being a huge blessing.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson that I have had to unlearn is that what I do as a career or the title I achieve does not define who I am or my worth as a person.
Being fired is a very humbling experience, you go through all the stages of grief. The hardest part was realizing how much I relied on my position and my career to validate who I was as a person.
How often do we look to outside sources or achievements to prove we are worthy of anything? Learning that my worth is not defined by what I do or what I achieve has significantly changed my life.
