We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful K. Sahagian (of Speak Easy). We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with K. below.
K., appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Both I and Eric (guitar and vocals) left our day jobs early 2021 after being more or less furloughed because of the pandemic. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to take a chance doing only music for a living. Brendon (bass and vocals) left his a little while after that. Looking back, I definitely wish we had all taken music as a career more seriously sooner. The value of the time that could’ve been dedicated to working on our music (or music business) would’ve seriously outweighed the value of whatever money we were making prior. Time is invaluable and also every day we get a little uglier, which is totally unmarketable.

K., before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We (Speak Easy) are a Tampa Bay indie/funk/R&B/soul/folk/rock/alt/pop group. Our most recent piece of music was the single ‘Moving Up/Breaking Through’ which released earlier 2022 to all streaming platforms. We exist to facilitate the vibe and are proud advocates of the good times.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I would check out Sun Tzu’s ancient Chinese military treatise, “The Art of War” if you’re in to that sort of thing. At Speak Easy, every demographic is a new challenger and our music is our sword.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best way to support us is to shop local, specifically at the Speak Easy Official Store. Supporting us directly via tee shirt sales is what wakes us up in the morning. Also streaming our music. Continually. We live to see our Spotify monthly listeners go up.
