We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeremy Golden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jeremy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
There have been many moments that have defined my professional career. I would say the most defining moment for me was after I left my last position in college athletics and decided to go after something I’ve wanted to do in a long time. For many years, my identity was based around my job. I felt like who I was as a person, how I was viewed was based on my job as a collegiate and professional Strength and Conditioning Coach. When I left my last position, I set out on an adventure, one that was unpredictable and was so foreign to me, that I had to dig deep within myself to find the faith needed to go on this adventure. I was entering a world where I was not working in college, but working towards a new goal of mine. So, starting my new job at Tehama Golf Club as the Director of Fitness and betting on myself and truly believing I could take this step was a career-defining moment for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have worked as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for many years. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for strength training. I credit strength training with allowing me to walk-on to my college football team at The University of Tulsa without ever playing football before. It gave me a chance to succeed in the sport I always dreamed of playing. So this profession has been with me a long time. In 2006, I took the plunge and began my career as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. It has been a roller coaster ride, but I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. It has allowed me to see some of the most beautiful places in the world and given me experiences I never thought possible.
Now, I currently work as the Director of Fitness at Tehama Golf Club, where I have spread my wings and not only become the Strength and Conditioning Coach I want to be, but am learning the business side of things at a level I never thought I would. I do a lot with elite and amateur golfers, but I also work with people who are just trying to get fit and stay fit. My services aren’t just geared towards the golfer now, but to any athlete or any person trying to better themselves physically as well as mentally.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
The most important thing in my field is the ability to communicate effectively. I might see 10 clients in one day, and all 10 of these people have specific needs they need met. When working with people, one size doesn’t fit all. You have to be able to communicate with a wide variety of people and adapt at a moment’s notice. The ability to communicate to people and get them to understand what it is you’re doing for them and how you’re helping them to me is key factor in a person’s success.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The most important thing is to care about the people you’re working with. Everyone has their goals and things they want to accomplish in life. Everyone also has their problems and things that may not be going well in their lives. In my opinion, you have to care about people and trust the people you work with and who work for you. It’s important to empower people and give them a purpose.
