We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Qian Zhong. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Qian below.
Qian, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope to build a legacy that truly impacts society. Since childhood, I have dreamed of becoming an artist who makes a difference. I have always believed that art holds both intrinsic value and immense power—it has the ability to provoke thought, spark dialogue, and shape our understanding of the world. This belief has guided me along my creative journey, driving me to create work that resonates emotionally and fosters meaningful connections on a broader social level.

Qian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born in 1995 in Chengdu, China, approaches art as a deeply empathetic response to the world around her. Rather than retreating into introspection, she channels her sensitivity outward, using creative expression to engage with and reflect upon the complexities of contemporary life. For Zhong, art is not only a medium for personal exploration but also a powerful tool for communication and connection, allowing her to confront social phenomena and navigate collective imagery. Her work focuses on themes of female identity and desire, offering a poignant critique of modern societal constructs and the challenges they impose.
Through her work, particularly in painting, Zhong strives to construct an imagined utopia—a realm where healing, fulfillment, and illusion converge. Her art captures the tensions between the ideal and the unattainable, offering both critique and solace in its vision of a reimagined world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most valuable aspect of being an artist is the ability to connect individuals with society and break down the barriers of exclusivity, making art accessible to a wider audience. My work explores themes of female identity and desire, and beyond that, I have been actively involved in public art initiatives in my hometown, Chengdu—creating murals and projects that bring art into everyday life rather than confining it to high-end galleries. Art, to me, is not just about self-expression but about sparking conversations, inspiring reflection, and allowing more people to see their own experiences represented and understood.
Currently, I am studying at the Royal College of Art, taking this opportunity to further refine my practice and expand its impact. The possibility of engaging in meaningful dialogue with the world and creating art that resonates beyond the studio is what I find most valuable as an artist.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by a desire to explore the complexities of female identity and desire while making art more accessible to the public. Through my work, I seek to challenge societal constructs, amplify personal narratives, and create spaces for reflection and dialogue.
