We were lucky to catch up with Chelsea Silva recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsea, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When the pandemic hit, like a lot of people, I found myself with a lot of extra time on my hands. I had always wanted to try sewing, so I picked up a sewing machine—mainly with the idea of making dog bandanas for my dog, Massey. After all, when your dog looks good, you feel good, right? It was a fun, creative project, and I started really getting into it.
But as I was making bandanas, I realized that I actually loved the process of sewing. I began thinking about other things I could make. One of the things I was always buying online was headbands—but no matter where I looked, I could never find exactly what I wanted. That’s when it clicked: I could make them myself.
I wasn’t totally sure where to start, but I figured I’d give it a shot. I turned to YouTube for tutorials, grabbed some fabric from Joann’s, and began making headbands for myself. At first, it was just for fun, but I quickly realized they were turning out way better than I expected.
But I still wasn’t confident enough to do anything with them—until a friend asked me to join a pop-up shop at her dance studio. I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone and sell a few headbands, even though I wasn’t sure what to expect.
And then, I sold 23 headbands in one day. I was floored. That was the moment I knew I had something—something people actually wanted. And just like that, Oh So Chelsea was born.
Since then, I’ve sold over 400 headbands. It’s been an amazing journey of learning, experimenting, and growing, and I’m so thankful for all the support along the way. What started as a little sewing project for myself turned into a business that’s all about creating something special that makes people feel good.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi there! I’m Chelsea, the founder and creator behind Oh So Chelsea. I’m passionate about making handmade headbands that not only look amazing but make you feel great, too. What began as a fun, personal project during the pandemic has grown into a business that’s all about creating unique, high-quality accessories for anyone who loves to stand out and add a little flair to their look.
What I love most about my business is the personal touch that goes into each piece. Every headband I create is carefully designed and handmade by me, ensuring it’s not just an accessory, but something that people can wear with pride. I’m incredibly proud of the fact that Oh So Chelsea offers headbands made with real attention to detail—from selecting the perfect fabrics to crafting each piece with care, comfort, and durability in mind.
My products are all about versatility. Whether you’re looking for a statement piece to add a pop of color to your outfit or something more subtle to elevate your everyday look, there’s a headband for everyone. The goal is to create accessories that make you feel confident, stylish, and a little more put-together, no matter where you’re going or what you’re doing.
What sets Oh So Chelsea apart? It’s the quality and the creativity I pour into every headband. I strive to design headbands that don’t just look good, but are comfortable enough to wear all day without giving you a headache. It’s that perfect balance of style and comfort. Plus, I love offering unique fabrics and designs that you might not find everywhere else. Each headband is an expression of my creativity and passion for design.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come since launching this business. It’s been a journey of learning, growing, and connecting with people who appreciate the time and effort that goes into handmade goods. The fact that I’ve been able to make over 400 headbands so far and receive such positive feedback from my customers means the world to me.
At Oh So Chelsea, my focus is on quality, comfort, and creativity. I’m here to make headbands that bring joy to your everyday style. So, whether you’re treating yourself or looking for a special gift for someone, you can trust that every piece I make is designed with care and a little bit of love.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For me, the best sources of new clients have been through participating in local markets and securing retail partnerships. There’s something special about being able to showcase my headbands in person—whether at a farmer’s market, craft fair, or local event. It’s the kind of setting where people can touch the products, try them on, and see the quality for themselves, which really helps convert curious shoppers into customers. Plus, I love getting that immediate feedback and seeing people’s reactions when they find something they absolutely love.
Having headbands available at a few retail locations has been a game-changer too. It’s allowed me to reach customers who might not be active on social media or who prefer shopping in-store. The exposure from these retail partners has expanded my reach beyond my local markets, and I’ve been able to tap into new customer bases that may not have discovered Oh So Chelsea otherwise.
Both of these strategies have allowed me to build a loyal customer base, and I’m grateful for the connections and relationships that have come from them. The beauty of in-person interactions is that they really help create an authentic community around my brand.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my social media presence has definitely been a slow burn. I’m still growing, but one thing I’ve learned is that consistency is key. I started by posting regularly—whether it was showing off new headbands, sharing behind-the-scenes moments, or just being authentic with my followers. It takes time, but over the months, I’ve learned that engagement matters just as much as posting. Responding to comments, sharing user photos, and connecting with others in the community has helped me build real relationships, not just followers.
If you’re just starting out, my advice would be to show up consistently, engage with your audience authentically, and don’t get discouraged if growth is slow at first. It’s all about building that connection over time!
