Close friends and admirers of my work often ask me, “Rance why aren’t you acting more? Why aren’t you on TV again?” My answer is always the same, “Most producers/directors/casting directors at this point in my career, don’t see me the way you see me. You see me as a talented, confident, great actor. Yes, you see I’m different given that I’m 4’6” tall but otherwise, you see that I’m just living my life. Making jewelry is such an interesting art form. There are so many different styles of jewelry and therefore the makers and designers also vary in their approach and their reason for creating. I love and appreciate all the variations. I have been really lucky to find a great group of jewelry makers who create very different work then me, who understand my intention in my designs and how I work. I joke that I am just a bead stringer, and it is true. I love putting together my designs but do not make the components. My art specialty is the ancient wax resist art process known as batik. It originated in Indonesia thousands of years ago and has spread around the world as most civilizations have some sort of access to wax, dye, and fabric. Many people don’t quite understand what is batik or how it is created-it commonly gets confused with tie-dye, also a resist process. As it is constantly misunderstood, artwork created using wax and dye on silk does not generate the same prices as an oil painting even though it can be a lot more time consuming than doing an oil or acrylic painting and can also look similar to these other art forms.
