Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Lory Hector.
Hi Becca Lory , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After 3 years home bound and suicidal, I was identified as Autistic in adulthood. The diagnosis not only saved my life but gave me a purpose, to change the world for the Autistics that come after me. I now do with autism research, DEIB facilitation, writing, speaking and consulting.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It is never a smooth road to take the path never before traveled. When I started out I was considered lazy for working remotely to accommodate my differences. It took money and continuous effort to urn my reputation and build a following of clients. It took endless resilience to get the world to take me seriously. There were many more failures than successes and even though parts of my job of judged less these days, ableism is still as rampant as ever.
We’ve been impressed with Truly Inclusive Leadership, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the lead consultant aand founder of Truly Inclusive Leadership where, as an openly Autistic Professional, I am on a mission to close the disability gap in leadership by working with companies to attract and retain Disabled talent via their DEIB initiatives.
I am also a dedicated autism and neurodiversity SME, researcher, consultant, speaker, and author of the book “Always Bring Your Sunglasses: And Other Stories from a Life of Sensory and Social Invalidation”. In addition, I am focused on Autistic Quality of Life (AQoL) research, and my personal development course called ‘Self Defined Living: A Path to a Quality Autistic Life.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
My favorite lesson from COVID-19 is that the excuse “because that’s how we have always done it” is no longer valid. With COVID came a new normal for our workplaces and that was a much needed change for society’s evolution.
