We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adam Gomez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adam below.
Alright, Adam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The Punk Rock bands I drum for now are bands that I listened to over and over again as a young teenager, so it is very meaningful to me now being on the other side of the stage, actually playing in the band, rather than watching them.
Adam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m mostly a Punk Rock Drummer from a rough area(s) of Los Angeles, and have been exclusively with The Dickies for the past 12 years. My passion for performing and drumming started early, mainly because music and art runs in the family. After my first 6 years of performing, I decided to attend (and graduate from) Musicians Institute, in Hollywood, CA.
I found my first touring gig by scouring Craig’s List and finding a band who needed a Drummer for a European tour, and had built my reputation from there.
I perform live for different Punk/ Rock bands, and am also commissioned for studio recordings related to TV/ Media projects like, the Jellystone cartoon on HBO Max and Killer Klowns The Game (XBox, PS5).
What sets me apart from the Punk Rock Drummers around me is that I am always looking to find the groove within Punk songs because of my learning background with R&B inclined teachers (Donny Gruendler, Chuck Silverman), and also know when to turn the knob to 11 and unleash on the drum set. My outlook is to perform like it’s your last time because you never know: it just might be.
I’m proud that I have never given up on myself. The up and comers out there need to know that even doing what you love comes with falling down and taking blows. It’s part of the deal. You’ve gotta’ remind yourself that you still love what you do even though there are tough moments and that you love yourself enough to get back up, bloodied and beaten, and push forward.
In my Experience: Having a good time at my places of performance/ recordings is KEY for the ultimate real life, positive experience, that has brought me authentic new friendships, and more extended opportunities to do what I love. As simple and as mundane as that might sound to you, it is such a huge piece of growing your brand, reputation, etc. This can be applied to your specific field, trust me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have two main drivers embedded into my creative journey. My first pertains to being a Father/ Husband and having to keep a roof over our heads and contributing to keeping food on the table and the water still running in the house we own. I am still thriving towards transitioning into being a drummer/ music artist full time, while still upholding my commitments to the family life. I ‘ve been putting about 90% ( or a little more) of all my drumming earnings into a savings account for my 7 yr old daughter, be it for schooling or investments/ business ventures that would secure her financial stability later in life.
My second driver pertains to what was given to me as a young kid: inspiration! Being inspired by music that was unique to me, that blew my mind, that filled me with natural energy; that’s what I hope I am handing over to the kids that come across my works and accomplishments. Hearing music and bands that continued to inspire me to get up off my butt and start creating, changed my life.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
A trifecta of rewards for me: One would be honing the ability to experience a completely organic, naturally made rush and dopamine surge from enjoying the craft of drumming and creating music.
Two would be the very satisfying feeling of knowing my earnings from doing what I love is going towards something and someone that is bigger and more important than myself.
Three would be the seldom moments of having a conversation with a younger aspiring musician that tells me that I have inspired them to push harder to pursue their passion.
