Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julian Richards. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Julian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I started my Physical Therapy Practice one year ago after serving as an Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic Manager for 8 years. I remember very clearly feeling overwhelmed with the thought of going out on my own and establishing a Physical Therapy Practice independently. The main steps I took in those first few weeks and months were to establish relationships; relationships with other business owners in my field and outside of my field. I was looking to glean experience from anyone that had once stood where I now stood. Some of the key challenges in setting up my own practice were determining where I would treat patients, I was very unclear of what it would take to obtain a business license, permits and satisfy all of the necessary requirements to operate in good standing. Many of the requirements needed to start up seemed vague and unclear. Despite encountering several resources, it seemed like everyone had different steps. Knowing what I know now, I would have sought a mentor who was doing exactly what I wanted to do prior to stepping out on this new venture. Advice I would give to young professionals who might be considering starting their own practice would be to be unafraid to ask questions and seek to establish a network of like-minded individuals to help you learn and grow.
Julian , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist serving the Greater Orlando area. I have always had a passion for health, wellness and fitness, so after seeking my Doctorate in Physical Therapy it only seemed natural to seek a job in Outpatient Orthpedic Physical Therapy. After working as a Staff Therapist for a few years and becoming a Board Certified Orthopedic Physical Therapy I sought a position of leadership and helped grow and manage a busy Orthopedic PT clinic for several years. In addition to manage I mentored and taught in an Orthopedic PT Residency program. Following these roles, I sought to go out on my own providing Mobile and Gym-Based Sport and Orthopedic Physical Therapy. I am most proud of the work I have done in providing Performance Physical Therapy in Orlando, Florida and having begun to build a network of patients and clients who are seeking to better their health and wellness. The main thing I would want potential clients and followers to know about my work, is that I set myself apart by focusing on the individual needs of those I work with and structure plans and programs that meet them where they are. Beyond a high level of clinical knowledge and experience, I simply strive to care and provide more than my competition so that each individual I work with gets the value they seek out of my services.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely, I truly believe I was created to be a Physical Therapist. There is not a career or profession that I love more. I can recall from a very young age being passionate about physical health, wellness and fitness but I did not have the knowledge or context to truly understand what Physical Therapists do. I would absolutely choose the same profession and specialty because the work I do allows me to be creative yet evidence-based in my approach to helping others.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe that other than training/knowledge, the most helpful thing required to succeed in this field is a desire to seek the best for others. I believe that if you keep the patient/client at the forefront of your decision making, you are sure to succeed.
