We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Samantha Burns. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Samantha below.
Samantha , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses
Aside from content creating, I help manage my family’s small business, McClure’s Family Restaurant. My grandpa started it as a little walk up store along the road back in 1957 under the name McClure’s Dairy Isle. I have always been so inspired by him and my family working hard while growing up. I think that’s what’s pushed me to have the work ethic I do today.
One of toughest things about being in a family business is making sure that business is not the sole discussion at family get togethers. Sometimes we get a little carried away and forget to talk about other areas of our lives. There are also so many costs in operating a business that are unbeknownst to most people. When customers complain about high prices they don’t realize how much we have to pay to keep the doors open, there is a lot of overhead costs. I wish everyone realized how much small businesses relied on their constant support.
Samantha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a freelance content creator showing my audience all things I love: Motherhood, food, fashion & places we travel to. I’m 30 years old living in WV with my husband & 2 kids.
I thoroughly enjoy working with companies to try to find the best way we can achieve our goals, together. I’ve worked with over 200 businesses since I’ve started in content creation. Included in those are Torrid, Feld Entertainment, Panasonic, Bare Home, Pink Lily, St. Jude & Caden Lane.
My content creation career started when my son was 1. I was a stay at home mom at the time and needed something to have of my own to do. All of the content I created at first was baby led weaning related & I found an amazing community in that. After my son had outgrown that stage of life, I switched to motherhood content. Since having my daughter, I have expanded on posting about things we do, places we go & products we love.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I had to do a lot of research when I first started in content creation. It was hard to figure out how to approach companies & how to get brand deals. Eventually I found that there are platforms/apps/websites out there that have campaigns you can apply to! I’ve also learned that if there is a certain brand you want to work with, you should go for it and send the email you’re hesitating on sending. The worst thing to come of it would be they say no, but at least you tried!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of this career is a job well done. When a company is happy and satisfied with the content I created for them . . . it is the best feeling.
