We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bekah Drake a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bekah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I specialize in trauma recovery! So what that looks like is that I’m able to use years of experience studying trauma and how it effects our brain’s and body’s, connect that with body and breathwork, along with deep relaxation techniques like Reiki and Past Life Regression to connect with the subconscious to bring people to a more centered and balanced place in life.
Reiki is a technique used for relaxation, often used to reduce stress and anxiety, help people sleep better, help lighten the emotional load and release toxic patterns. In my longer sessions we take the time to really work with each chakra energy center, opening the flow of energy for the client and allowing a more balanced flow through their body. As we connect to each one there is very often big emotional releases, new realizations and the ability to sit in big emotions while they move out of the body, this allows traumas from the past to release from places they may have been stuck in a person sometimes for many years.
This happened for me during a past life regression! I had a memory and realization that my current fear and disgust of crows was connected to a past life memory of being a child during the Black Plague and seeing the plague doctors enter homes in their masks, and seeing the carrion birds in the town watching for anything they could find. As I sat with this energy and emotion I was able to release it from my body, I felt it in my shoulders they loosened and lifted. The next time I was at the gas station I was watching birds hop around the trashcan, normally having a sharp bodily reaction of withdrawal backward when I would see crows versus sparrows, and before I knew it I was climbing back into my car and I had to stop and realize my body didn’t react at all to the crows that time! It was so interesting!
I’ve seen things like this with other clients as well. One of the biggest things I’ve worked on myself and with clients is panic attacks. I can’t speak for my clients but for myself I have been able to completely stop my panic attacks with Reiki and Past Life Regression work so I know that it can vastly improve life after trauma.
I know what life is like with panick attacks everyday, living life with PTSD, & cPTSD, and just having experienced things in life like a global pandemic that are so overwhelming so I am passionate about sharing what I know about trauma and healing and all of the tools I have with anyone I can to help people grow and improve their lives.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got started in energywork after I experienced significant medical trauma. I was in the hospital for weeks and almost died which left me with a lot of trauma and PTSD. I started having panic attacks and it became very hard to live my life as a mom with three young children at home. I went to trauma therapy and started working back on many things while at the same time I started a yoga practice. I was able to connect the mind work with the body work and my whole life started to shift and open up. I then added Reiki and that’s when I felt the pull to start my business and share my skill and knowledge. I opened in 2019 I offered Reiki and Tarot, then I added Past Life Regression, then Akashic Records Processing.
One of the biggest things I work on with my clients is reconnecting to their bodies. When we experience trauma our brains do a great job of keeping us safe but they often hold on for too long and react when things are really okay. Dissociation is a very common skill for those who are neurodivergent, whose brains operate differently (and yes trauma does change your make and make it neurodiverse), it separates things so you don’t have to pay attention to all of them. Sometimes this is helpful and sometimes not so much.
We do this reconnecting with grounding and meditation practices, the deep relaxation space of reiki, the different processing involved in your own past live memories or in the energetic connections found in the Akashic records, and many other tools I’ve learned along the way as a trauma survivor.
I also work with dragon energy often so we frequently call in dragon guides and healing as we work as well. Many clients have met Dragon’s during sessions!
One of the other things I do is I create crystal and knotwork jewelry. My pieces are all created with intention, intuition, and care. While I knot each piece I infuse it with Reiki energy to match the theme of the piece. This way each piece can be worn to support a person with confidence, grounding, calm or whatever they are choosing. They also look really cool and they’re pretty so even if you don’t care about crystal meanings or energy they look and feel great, they last a long time, they are made with natural & biodegradable materials, and each piece is handmade. I also take custom orders if you have favorite colors or a special occasion.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I had been in business for a couple years but we had just moved cross country, from Texas to Richmond VA. So I was having to restart in a lot of ways. I was able to continue some things online but there was a big pause in my work for a while.
I was feeling lonely and restless, really disconnected. This was leading into the holiday season, so it was getting darker and colder and there were many messages everywhere about spending time/energy/money with or on people you love. Having just moved a few months before I didn’t know many people yet and my family was all in Texas. I spent Thanksgiving with my kids but it was the first Christmas after my divorce was final and I didn’t have custody on Christmas, so it was the first Christmas morning I ever missed with my kids. I spent the day with my partner and we had dinner with the kids later in the day but my heart was heavy and I definitely wasn’t feeling very connected to my work.
The week of Christmas I saw a post go by randomly on social media about an event on New Years Eve. It looked like fun and it still had applications open for vendors so I decided out of the blue to wing it. I applied. I didn’t think I would get in because it was so close to the event but a day or two later I got a confirmation that I was in!
So I completely stressed myself out over the next week about putting together my table for the event since it would be my first event in the area.
My partner and I packed up the car and went to Diversity Thrift for the first time ever, and spent New Years Eve with Party Liberation Foundation and so many beautiful people.
I was able to meet so many people in the area and some who came in just for this night. I was able to earn a really good income that night that kept my family running after Christmas. I made a friend and got a recommendation to work the Renaissance Faire! So I applied for that as soon as I got home and made it in! Which has led to multi years of Renn Faire work now at the Virginia Renaissance Faire! We’re looking forward to the 2025 season!
It’s always amazing what can come from one random application.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I do! I make the jewelry I carry by hand. I started with mala necklaces. I had a friend who made beautiful pieces and I always loved them but never quite had the money to spend on them when she had them to purchase. One Christmas she offered a package that was a tutorial including a video of how to make your own piece, and all the supplies needed to make it including all the crystal beads that we picked out together. I told my partner that year to get it for me for Christmas because it was the only thing I wanted.
So that’s what I started with. I spent hours trying to get the knots exactly right. I loved having something like that that I had made myself!
Then I of course wanted to make another one so I had to buy some beads, which escalated quickly. lol
I also had trouble with elastic bracelets either not fitting well or the elastic snapping really quickly. So I decided to learn how to make a bracelet. After that it’s been inspiration or someone asking for something specific. Now I have malas, bracelets, adjustable necklaces, keychains and I’m working on my own kits to learn how to make your own.
I’ve worked on sourcing beads and materials. I make each piece myself but I get the materials. When I can I get them from small business owners that I’ve met at gem shows locally but I also do a lot through wholesale businesses that ship to me. Sometimes my delivery people think I ordered bricks and they are pretty close sometimes. lol
I also use silk or cotton as my cord for strength and durability rather then blends like nylon.
My knot tying has gotten a lot better and a lot faster than when I started. I love creating new pieces and putting different things together. It’s my favorite part!
I have learned that my favorite things are not always my customers favorite things though. So I have had to learn how to make enough product to have a full table for events, with variety but not to overdo and make too many of the same things. I make lots of small batches of things and I never make the same mala necklace twice! I love making custom orders because it gives me a chance to be really creative.
