We recently connected with Litsie Monier and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Litsie , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
growing up in France, I was always passionate about dance. grew up dancing but more as a hobby. I went to a few dance schools back there. but one of them was doing competition, so I started to be interested in joining and getting better at it to get price and stuff. thanks to my hard work I started pricing and got French champion. which is the moment I realized I could maybe actually live from it. and then I started auditioning and got accepted to bigger schools, and then companies..

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Litsie Monier. I am 21 years old and a professional dancer and choreographer. I was born in France and moved after my high school at 18 to study and improve in dance in New York City.
During my years in France, I had the chance to participate in competitions and received the title of French Champion of Jazz Dance in 2018. I then left my city to move to Rouen and enter the Conservatory of Rouen and Jeanne D’arc high school following an intensive program specially designed for musicians and dancers.
At the end of High school, I went to New York City alone, without speaking English. I joined the International Dance School of Peridance and studied there for 2 years before graduating in June 2023. During these two years of studies but also 3 years of projects, creation and professionalization in the USA. I had the opportunity to create my own projects and be present at international festivals such as Ladies Of HipHop Festival for the opening of the annual battle,… I also to joined dance companies like Choreojoey, the neighbors, Dancers Unlimited and tours with them in the United States. I am currently in the process of creating my company and we are working hard on a new choreographic piece and the construction of a unique repertoire inspired by my life and origine from France and my the Bolivian folklore that I grew up dancing, and moved by house, hiphop and waacking, . I have to say that moving to New York changed my vision of dance, I meet the street and club dance style and felt in love with it, it make me started to freestyle, battle, to drill, to jam…

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
one of the most struggle of the dance industry this days is paid/non paid projects. because it is a work passion some company, jobs,… have tendency to over abuse this especially with young artist or immigrants. because we would do anything to get dance opportunities, this mean paying a lot to participate in workshop where agencies could see us, participating in non paid rehearsals, and shows. I think if the society was more aware of this and the gouvernement would help more in founding budget for the art and entertainment this wouldn’t be an issue.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
they are a lot of rewarding aspect, but truly seeing our choreographies danced by other people Is truly the most beautiful thing! especially when they love it. finishing a projects that have been taking sometimes years to be made is also such a rewarding on it’s own. to me personally being able to listen the audience talk about my work is truly wonderful, hearing their opinions and thought it’s really a special experience.
