We were lucky to catch up with Lise D’angelo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lise, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is a short film titled ‘Post Term’. It’s about a Pakistani immigrant couple starting their new life together and is based on the directors’ parents. What made this project so special was my experience seeing the film come together over the five days of filming. It was one of the first films I worked on. Seeing the way every little detail added to the storytelling and feeling of the film inspired me to continue working on films. My role of hand-laying a mustache each morning for Haaris and making Rahimah look over 9 months pregnant and tired are small details that helped convey the sentiment of the characters. It was the first time I saw my work in motion, on a screen, rather than just photos. It was inspiring to see all of these talented people so passionate about creating something meaningful, in many ways.

Lise, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a queer and trans makeup artist based in New York City. Growing up I had aways known I wanted to be in some sort of creative field. I started experimenting with makeup and clothing to express myself with bright colors and shapes. The more I experimented the more I loved being able to play around with my appearance and understand why it is so important to me. After attending Make-Up Deisgnory I realized how many things I could do with makeup as a profession. As a makeup artist I encourage and help everyone to play around with expression that makes them feel good. I have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects such as short films, music videos, photoshoots and special events.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a makeup artist for me is seeing something come together from start to finish. Most people love to see a finished product, myself included, but I really appreciate the entire planning process just as much as the actual makeup application. The process doesn’t always have a clear end and the ideas keep evolving and often inspire other things to form. Whether I’m working on my own project or being trusted to bring other visions to life I enjoy the entire operation of a project.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been to encourage people to express themselves authentically and have fun. As a trans person, self expression is something that is very valuable to me and my identity and I want to help everyone feel more comfortable being themselves. I encourage people to step out of their comfort zone even just a little bit, like maybe try a colored eyeliner, or a new blush color and really just play around with their existence.
