Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Destini Belton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Destini thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
“Play Your Cards Right LLC” established in 2018 is a
publishing/production company solely ran by a woman of color, mother of
three, content creator, author, publisher and artist “Destini S. Belton”
. The
name was sparked, inspired and envisioned by Destini’s personal life
experiences. The idea of moving through life strategically, diligently and
PURPOSEFULLY to make the next best move; which will ensure your success
story, destination and/ or drive towards an end goal. Growing up on the
“Eastside of Harlem” especially know as “Spanish Harlem or El Barrio”
,
Owner/Curator, Destini S. Belton, witnessed (and experienced) first hand the
wrong moves that unfortunately cost reputations, lives, freedom, sanity,
mental health woes, family, friends and respect; particularly stemming from
the residue of poverty, systemic racism, discrimination, miseducation, mass
incarceration, broken families, miseducation, or the lack thereof, school to
prison pipeline and more.
Destini’s goal as an innovator, forward thinker, personality,
“GOAL GETTER”
,
author and more importantly a MOTHER, is to define the next move through
action, resilience and diligence while breaking generational curses within our
communities. How? By allowing the freedom to host thought provoking
conversations that will shift the narrative of traditional BLACK culture (that is
often times outdated or misleading), create content that will empower the
youth to elderly demographic and lastly narrate stories through literature
(beginning with children’s literature) to begin the process of unlearning that
will positively influence OUR culture.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
First & foremost is a mother three beautifully dynamic children, beginning with her vibracious, charismatic 10-year-old daughter Elana Lowe. Lastly, set of exceptional 7-year-old twin boys, Eric Jr. Anthony. Destini is embracing her journey as Lehman College transfer undergraduate student and proud Founder & Curator of “Play Your Cards Right LLC (A Publishing/Production Company)” Destini Belton is a dedicated scholar and community advocate. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised both in El Barrio & the South Bronx of New York City, Destini’s journey is a rich tapestry of Artistry, Music, Hip Hop, Culture, Motherhood, and passion for empowering her community.
Equally significant is Destini’s role as an author. On June 18, 2021, she published Mama’s Baby & Poppa’s Baby TOO, a children’s book designed to challenge traditional narratives around family structure and the roles of mothers and fathers. Through her literature, Destini shifts the long-held belief of “Mama’s Baby & Poppa’s Maybe” by reinforcing the importance of both parental figures in shaping a child’s future. Her work aims to normalize healthy, inclusive family dynamics and provide children with stories that reflect the strength and diversity of their own experiences. Destini’s commitment to reshaping children’s literature is grounded in the belief that changing the stories we tell our children can deeply influence their self-worth, their values, and the legacy they build for generations to come.
As the Executive Producer, Co-creator and Co-host of the podcast Respectfully Ebony & Destini!, Destini uses her platform to engage in thought-provoking conversations about vital topics such as family dynamics, health, generational wealth, and societal issues. Podcasting serves as a powerful tool to challenge established narratives and open up dialogues that inspire critical thinking and reflection within the community. Destini believes that these conversations are essential in helping people confront difficult truths, while providing actionable solutions that can empower individuals to create lasting, positive change. Through the power of her voice, Destini fosters spaces for reflection and encourages her listeners to actively engage in the reshaping of their own lives and the world around them.
About “Play Your Cards Right” and it’s inspiration!
“Play Your Cards Right” customized logo holds such sentimental value since its
basis stems from her beloved grandmother’s,
“Delores V. Atkinson”
, love & passion
for visiting the casino and “playing numbers” (which she usually WON and shared
the earnings with her children/grandchildren), as she would call it. So the idea of a
slot machine that represents a gamble (life also can be a gamble which comes
along with risks) is a multifaceted open minded approach to emphasize a brand
whose mission is to inspire, motivate and empower”; intentionally the image is
extremely personal and heart felt.
The representation resembles a non-traditional extraordinary approach to
PLAYING CARDS on a machine hence “PLAY YOUR CARDS RIGHT”
, LIFE, FAMILY,
RISKS, GAMES & STRATEGY. Please follow “Play Your Cards Right” journey “Platform
To Empower” through content and conversation hosted on IGTV. Visit “Play Your
Cards Right Productions” on Youtube for more podcasting including conversations
with legendary HIP HOP group member “Havoc” from Mobb Deep.
Destini released a children’s book on June 19th (Juneteenth) 2021 named “Mama’s Baby &
Poppa’s Baby TOO” available on AMAZON and https://www.iamurdestini.com which
is the first product under “Play Your Cards Right LLC”
. The release of “Mama’s Baby
& Poppa’s Baby Too” officially stamped the business as an official
PUBLISHING/PRODUCTION. The support has been astounding. Available via
iamurdestini.com, Amazon & 500 retailers.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Despite not fulfilling the college experience fully , as planned, directly out of school due to financial inequities, Destini built her work experience diligently starting at the age of 19. Gaining skills and experience from almost every industry including, “Entertainment”, “Finance”, “Retail”, “Emergency Services”, “Hospitality”, Banking” and more recently healthcare. Over the past ten years, Destini has passionately served underserved communities as a “Chronic Disease Management Health”, “Lead Palliative Care Navigator” and Community Advocate assuming the “Tenant’s Association President” role at her residence to advocate on behalf of the tenant body. Despite not having a degree, Destini’s diligence, skillset and determination to succeed carved out a pathway to success which afforded her to provide for the family. Not to mention, while juggling her entrepreneurial endeavors. Once afforded the opportunity to fit the bill, Destini paid off her college debt in 2022 after a 17 year hiatus, and excitedly enrolled into “Lehman College” as a transfer “Adult Degree Program” student to kick hi where she left off, I willingly, in 2006. Studying Africana studies as a major, with Film/Tv as a minor, she is a walking example of defying adversity through faith and persistence.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Breaking the curse of generational poverty fueled by systemic racism to build a legacy and generational wealth for her children.
