Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amrita Singhal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amrita, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
How did I learn the craft? This is a complicated query posing as a simple question. I think I learned to paint by being madly in love with the act of creating and with oil paint itself. This ongoing obsession includes some of the following (in no particular order): The physical act of smearing paint on surfaces, experimentation with materials/ideas/color/texture, the marvel that is art history, the experience of the natural world. I’m constantly learning. To be even a passable painter requires considerable discipline and commitment. It also helps to have a tenacious, rebellious self that can handle all the rejection that comes with being a painter.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I came into painting by way of being a lawyer so it was a bit of a circuitous road. But lawyers learn to learn thoroughly! My legal education prepared me for my real vocation as I was able to teach myself different art techniques through a great deal of research and experimentation. I also grew up in India and moved to the US as an adolescent so vibrant colors and textures, ancient ruins and architecture, spirituality, and music from around the world significantly influence my work. In addition to painting, I’m currently creating a show in virtual reality. Creativity goes where it will and I especially appreciate this boundless potential of the artistic life.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Henri Matisse said “the essential thing is to put oneself in a frame of mind which is close to that of prayer”. Painting allows me this essential thing. The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is simply doing the work. And when the work is good, it gives the artist a voice. I find satisfaction in being part of a tribe that has, since the beginning of time, worked to bring expression and beauty into the world. I respect the talent, dedication and agility this requires.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. The world is simultaneously brutal, cruel, magnificent and yes, also perfect. My goal is to convey the inarticulable through a visual language, to promote feeling and contemplation, and to share a love of nature. I want to create poetic, tactile experiences in paintings that people want to live with for a very long time.
