We were lucky to catch up with Jess Brownsberger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jess, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I really wish I had started creating content way earlier, and I also wish I had focused on multiple platforms instead of just sticking to one. I’m the kind of person who hates juggling multiple apps, so I usually just stick with one that I like. But, with how fast social media changes, it’s so important to be active on all fronts.
I began creating TikToks in 2020 when I was pregnant with my first baby. It ended up being a great decision because I was able to share my entire motherhood journey with the world. The downside, though, is that my followers now only know me as a mom, and it feels like that’s become my whole identity. I can’t stray too far from mom content, or else the algorithm doesn’t push my posts as much.
Looking back, I regret not starting sooner. At first, TikTok was kind of seen as a joke by a lot of people, just an app for high school kids doing dances. But now, I love seeing creators go through all their different phases. I really wish I’d started sharing our family’s journey from the start or had been more confident about posting sooner.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I used to work in the non-profit sector of the music industry, but when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I decided to stay home for a variety of reasons. Having always needed a creative outlet, I turned to social media content creation. A lot of my content focused on the experiences of being a first-time mom, and it quickly resonated with so many women, causing my platform to grow.
Fast forward to today, and I’ve just had my third baby while continuing to create content! Our first child had open heart surgery last year, and our second… well, she’s the classic second child. Over the past year or two, I’ve loved working with brands and collaborating with like-minded individuals. So many of the brands I’ve partnered with have truly made our lives easier and helped us navigate the parenting journey, and I’m grateful for the platform that’s allowed me to connect with them.
After going through our own health journey, I realized the importance of making some lifestyle changes for our family. I’ve become very vocal about helping our kids live healthier lives—eliminating artificial dyes, opting for organic foods, and generally working to create a more balanced and low-toxic lifestyle. This journey has opened doors for me to create advertisements, speak on unbiased news channels, and even do interviews with outlets like the Wall Street Journal.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
At first, creativity and community were the two main forces driving my journey. I loved creating content that other moms could relate to. But when we found out our daughter was born with a heart defect, TikTok became an incredible space for me to connect with a community of moms who had gone through similar experiences. The support and advice I received from people I had never met was such a blessing.
Now, after navigating so many different aspects of parenting and motherhood, my focus has shifted. My mission is all about sharing the truth. I’m no longer trying to get people to “like” my content; I want them to connect with it and relate to it. I realized that, if I have this platform, I should use it for something more meaningful. I truly believe I’m in this position to help others open their eyes to the world around us and become more aware of the decisions we are making for ourselves and our children.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Be consistent! It is such a gift and takes certain type of person to be able to talk into the camera on their phone like they are talking to their best friend ALL THE TIME. My new motto lately is “everything is content” but it takes a lot of courage and confidence to always be ready to record or film at any given moment.
If you are just starting out, I’d say to make sure you are being authentically YOU. Your content will do so much better if you dont have to fake it. Someone will always have something to say no matter what so just go for it! At the end of the day, you will never see these people in real life!! But share your stories! Chances are there are a lot of people out there going through similar life experiences!!
