We recently connected with Danielle Nicole and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
When I think about how my business scaled to where it is today, I can honestly say it wasn’t an overnight success—it was years of intentional effort, purposeful planning, and constantly evaluating and improving my client’s experience. From the beginning, I’ve always operated with a long-term vision, guided by a 5- to 10-year game plan. My focus wasn’t just on where I wanted my business to be right now, but on where I wanted it to go. That mindset shaped every decision I made.
I prioritized intentionality, not impulsivity. For example, I’ve always believed in saving towards the things that will be long-lasting. The only things I own that depreciate are my cameras—everything else, from the gear I use to the systems I’ve built, has been carefully chosen to serve my business in the long run. I don’t buy what’s trendy or quick-fix solutions; I invest in tools and resources that align with my vision for the future. This strategy required me to make sacrifices in the short term, but it has paid off in creating a sustainable, high-quality business.
Scaling my business wasn’t just about the gear or systems, though. It was about education and learning from the best in the industry. I sought out mentorships, second-shot dozens of weddings, dove into online courses, and soaked up every bit of behind-the-scenes knowledge I could find. One of the biggest turning points was investing in a business coach. That investment was over triple what many couples invest in me for their weddings, but it was worth every penny because it allowed me to better serve my clients.
There were obstacles, of course. I had to learn how to make big decisions with little room for error, manage my time as a mom and entrepreneur, and find balance between providing a luxury experience for my clients and running a profitable business. Each challenge pushed me to grow—not just as a photographer and videographer, but as a servant-hearted business owner dedicated to creating value for my clients.
Ultimately, scaling for me has never been about chasing numbers, it’s been about staying true to my values and serving my clients in the most meaningful way possible. I believe success comes when you build with intention and serve with purpose—and you rise when you help lift others.

Danielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a luxury portrait and wedding photographer and videographer based in South Dakota. My passion for storytelling drives everything I do. I specialize in capturing timeless, fine-art imagery and heartfelt films that preserve the beauty and emotion of life’s most meaningful moments. My approach combines intentional artistry with a deep commitment to serving my clients through a seamless, full-service experience.
My clients who invest in my experience value a stress-free experience and want more than just digital images on their phone. They want to feel pampered with my session and wedding planning process, have access to my client wardrobe and hair/makeup services, and trust that their timeless photo and video imagery are safe in the hands of a experienced professional.
What sets my portrait and wedding experience apart is my focus on creating heirloom-quality products that take memories off screens and turn them into tangible keepsakes. From custom-framed prints to handcrafted albums, my goal is to ensure that the moments I capture are enjoyed for generations. Why invest a ton of money on your wedding photos and video if at the end of the day it just sits on your phone? Same for portrait clients! I want more for my clients and I am SO passionate about designing their dream heirlooms.
Clients hire me for 3 reasons:
1. For my 10+ years of experience photographing hundreds (200+) of sessions and 85+ weddings. Because of my past experience, I offer an in-depth level of session and wedding planning with complimentary resources to help educate and ensure we capture their vision! So in a way, when you hire me, you also gain 85+ weddings/200+ portraits worth of knowledge that I can help guide you through your day to make it as stress-free and seamless as possible!
2. When clients hire me, they book with an assurance that I also have a trained-in team ready to step up on wedding days in case of a difficult situation. Yes, we have contracts in place to outline the 1 in a million what-if situations that can arise, but I take it a step further by assuring all my clients I have trained-in associates and second shooters who can step into my shoes if needed. Back in 2022, I got into a horrific accident totaling my vehicle on the way to help second shoot a wedding and wasn’t able to make it. Because of that incident, I have made it a priority to hand-select team who have worked with me and know my process and can serve my clients in the off-chance a medical, weather-related, or one-off situation were to occur and I couldn’t make it. No matter what, my clients will always be taken care of and that’s a priority for me! My associates and second shooter team have blown me away with how incredible they are! I love being able to offer a smaller investment package for my associate team to couples who may not be able to invest in me specifically shooting their wedding imagery, but still want the MBDN wedding planning and editing experience, just with another face on their wedding day.
3. Insanely fast turnaround times. I do not overbook myself, which allows me to return full galleries and films incredibly fast compared to others in my industry. I’ve heard countless horror stories of couples not receiving their photos back within 6 months or losing their imagery and I cannot even imagine treating clients like that. In 2017, I photographed my first solo wedding and ever since I have made it a priority to have quick processing times. Full sessions are usually returned within 72 hours to a week and full weddings are delivered within a week, sometimes even within 1-3 days. I can do this because my editing style is extremely stream-lined and consistent. Wedding films are usually returned by the couple’s first month anniversary. For weddings, I also offer behind-the-scenes wedding day content creation on their big day, allowing them to relive and share their day within 48 hours.
At the heart of my business is a servant-hearted approach. By limiting the number of weddings and sessions I take on each year, I’m able to give each client the care and attention they deserve. My mission is to provide an elevated experience that celebrates their stories and creates lasting legacies through intentional, timeless artistry.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My love for photography and videography started in childhood with a Barbie camcorder that recorded to VHS tapes and my pink Polaroid digital camera. Even back then, I was captivated by the magic of capturing memories. In high school, I fell in love with photographing senior sessions and sports, which led to becoming the football team photographer at my university. My journey into weddings began in 2017 when I shot my first wedding, and from that moment, I instantly fell in love with capturing wedding days and all the beautiful moments.
After relocating from the Twin Cities in Minnesota to South Dakota, I discovered a passion for capturing families and weddings. At the time, I was working full-time for a world-wide electrical component company, gaining invaluable confidence on their inside-sales team. My business truly took off in 2021, and within 12 months, I captured 35 weddings. After having my first baby, I realized my heart was at home with my son. Daycare was impossible to find to fit our family, and I’m so thankful God opened the doors for me to step full-time into my photography and website design businesses, as hard as it was to leave my full-time job work family behind (truly I had the BEST co-workers!). Now, I’m able to pursue my passion for storytelling while being present with my family, a balance that means everything to me. When not working, I love to spend my days outside in the garden and enjoying the produce and tending to my pretty flower garden that makes for the best photo session backdrops.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is hearing how much my clients love their imagery and how beautiful they feel because of it. Knowing that I’ve captured their memories in a way that brings joy and confidence is truly fulfilling. After experiencing a complicated and traumatic birth with my son, followed by a miscarriage, I realized how precious those fleeting moments are. I never got photos with my son in the hospital due to our traumatic experience (I split my pelvis 2 cm. and he was unexpectedly flown out to the NICU on a private plane) and had a disappointing newborn session, which left me with very few keepsakes from that time. After returning home, I was still dealing with my PPSD excruciating pain and learning how to walk again, so it wasn’t until my son was 8 weeks old when I finally was able to pull out my camera and take a few photos of him in my studio.
That experience empowered me to really focus on serving mamas, offering a motherhood experience, as well as preserving the milestones of families, seniors and newborns. My mission is to turn these irreplaceable moments into heirloom keepsakes that families can treasure forever. These photographs will only grow more valuable as time goes on, becoming a cherished part of their legacy. Being able to provide tangible and custom albums and wall art to ensure client’s investment in my imagery comes to life is what makes this work so meaningful to me.
