We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ken Cole. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ken below.
Ken, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
To give you a little personal background, I’d always been drawn to the performing arts – whether it was theater or music or sketch comedy. Many times through high school and college I considered pursuing studies in filmmaking or performance. However, my family strongly advised me to get a “hard degree.” So I chose meteorology because I also loved weather and extreme phenomena.
So taking us to December of 2001, I was in my senior year of studying meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, and I had been accepted to an exclusive graduate meteorology program at OU. I had just seen Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and was blown away. Shortly after the movie’s premiere, there was an event at OU where Costa Botes, a filmmaker who documented the making of The Lord of the Rings, was speaking and showing behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the movies.
I vividly remember watching all of this intimate making-of footage and listening to Costa Botes’s stories. Walking out of that event I realized how much I was in love with every aspect of filmmaking and decided I needed make a career out of it. The following Monday I withdrew from my spot in the exclusive graduate program and decided to study filmmaking instead. It was an evening that changed the course of my life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a filmmaker and YouTuber who started professionally in the documentary world. My graduate thesis film, a documentary called Tornado Glory, was broadcast nationally on PBS and followed two college storm chasers named Reed Timmer and Joel Taylor. Reed and Joel went on to star in Discovery’s Storm Chasers series, and I subsequently directed “Heaven’s Rage” and was showrunner for the Tornado Chasers series, now on Prime Video.
Recently I’ve become a YouTuber following the surprise success of my film/television analysis videos about the Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai series. I love the character of Terry Silver and the whole story universe, and it’s been amazing connecting with fans and the creators of the series.
I also continue to make films with my recent comedy “Bigfoot & Me” which just finished an international festival run and “Cobra Cole,” which is a tongue-in-cheek, Cobra Kai-esqe film featuring David Shatraw from the Cobra Kai series.
I think I’m unique in that I’m visual storyteller and filmmaker, while at the same time I have a technical background in science and problem solving. It’s an interesting combination of skills that has helped me solve logistical problems and maximize production value with smaller budgets.
When people visit my YouTube channel, they should always experience an entertaining and thought-provoking video of a topic. Hopefully they might be inspired to think of things in a new way and share their thoughts with the community. My favorite part of being a creator is hearing all of these ideas and comments from viewers, some of which are extremely detailed and inspiring.
I’m very proud of all of my Cobra Kai-themed YouTube work, and viewers can look forward to more in-depth, fun and funny analysis of the Cobra Kai world. I’m looking forward to broadening my videos to other properties beyond Cobra Kai as well. As a filmmaker, I’m very proud of Cobra Cole (every Cobra Kai fan should check it out!) and the second season of Tornado Chasers stands as my most epic work.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is collaborating with other creatives and artists on a project. Every person has unique talents and a perspective on the universe. What excites me the most is the privilege to work with other talented people to create something we couldn’t have made on our own.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think my goal as a creative has two parts: a) to learn who my current/future audience is and what they’d like to see and b) to build a self-sustaining creative space. I think I share the dream of many creatives – to have a dedicated audience, a strong professional network, and the ability to “greenlight” our own ambitious projects. I’d love to build a creative team, experiment and push the envelope to surprise and delight viewers.
