When I came to the United States, I had just $200 in my pocket and a dream to create a better life. I didn’t know the language, didn’t have any connections, and had no clear path forward. What I did have, though, was resilience and a belief that no matter how hard things got, I could figure it out.
The early days were incredibly tough. I worked long hours in low-paying jobs—landscaping, cooking in restaurants, waiting tables—just to get by. There were moments when I felt like I was running in place, struggling to make progress while carrying the weight of uncertainty and exhaustion. But I refused to let my circumstances define me. Every challenge became fuel for my determination.
One of the hardest lessons I learned came during a particularly rough patch when I had to start over from scratch. It was humbling, but it taught me how to rebuild with focus and purpose. Slowly but surely, I began finding opportunities. I educated myself, took risks, and started investing in real estate. I didn’t have much, but I used creativity and persistence to overcome the lack of resources. What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that working harder always leads to success. Growing up, I was taught that if you just put in more hours and work harder than everyone else, you’ll eventually achieve your goals. And while there’s truth to the value of hard work, I realized that hard work without strategy can lead to burnout without progress.
When I first came to the U.S. with just $200, I took any job I could get—landscaping, working in restaurants, and pulling double shifts. I believed that grinding day in and day out was the only way to get ahead. But no matter how hard I worked, I was barely scraping by. I was exhausted, and it felt like I was running on a hamster wheel.
The turning point came when I was introduced to real estate investing. I saw people building wealth not by working more hours but by working smarter—leveraging systems, relationships, and creative strategies. It hit me that success wasn’t about how much I could do on my own but about how effectively I could use my time and resources.
